Niederried near Interlaken lies on Lake Brienz at the foot of the Augstmatthorn. If you want to choose between spending time by the water and exploring marked hiking trails, both are available as distinct options: the swimming area and lakeside path are by the lake, while trails lead west and east from Niederried.
Between Lake Brienz and the Augstmatthorn
The municipality in the canton of Bern is more than 700 years old. Niederried is considered a small holiday village on Lake Brienz in the heart of the Jungfrau Region. The surroundings are considered idyllic and offer views of the lake. The location may also be a useful point of comparison for a trip focused on winter sports: the Jungfrau and Meiringen-Hasliberg regions are about a half-hour drive from Niederried. The actual travel time depends on traffic, weather and mode of transport.
Hiking trails for different levels
The marked hiking trails lead west from Niederried via Ringgenberg to Interlaken and east via Oberried to Brienz. In and around the village, options range from leisurely walks to steep climbs. When choosing, you can therefore take into account both the direction and the type of ascent you prefer, without treating all trails as equally challenging.
The route to Suggiture leads to Niederried’s highest point, at 2,085 metres. Another tour is the “Excursion destination Emme” hike: it is accessible from the railway and boat stations in Niederried and includes a long, steep climb with panoramic views. It follows the ridge into the “Habkern/Sörenberg” Emerald Area and the headwaters of the Emme. Several springs lie along the way, all of which feed their water into the Emme. The Lake Brienz Loop is another option: after crossing Ringgenberg, it continues along an unpaved road to Niederried and offers views of Lake Brienz. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Lakeside path, swimming area and lake activities
The swimming area is right on the shore of Lake Brienz and beside the lakeside path. Activities on the lake include sailing, surfing, fishing, sunbathing, picnicking, relaxing and swimming; some may be seasonal. Local rules at the swimming area may change, so check the current regulations before your visit. If you would like to plan a quieter stop, you will find rest areas right by the lake along the lakeside path. The well-restored Ringgenberg Castle ruins are also located along the lakeside path.
The Entenstein barbecue area is right beside the lakeside path and just a few minutes’ walk from the swimming area. Reservations are not possible there. The swimming area and barbecue area can therefore be considered separate places to stop for a break by the water; when planning to use the barbecue area, bear in mind that reservations are not possible.
Local history and practical planning
The Ofehüsi is a 19th-century bakehouse. The idea to renovate it arose during preparations for Niederried’s 700th-anniversary celebration in May 2003. The long-standing team ended operations in April 2023 after 20 years. Check its current operating status before planning a visit.
Niederried is easily accessible by Zentralbahn train from Interlaken Ost. Boats depart from the landing stage by the schoolhouse on Untere Gasse in Niederried. As seasonal and timetable changes are possible, check current connections before travelling.
