The surviving 1682 smelting furnace is part of Gundlischwand’s cultural history. For hiking, options range from easier trails to challenging mountain hikes. There is also the ViaBerna and cycling route 6.1. If you are planning a stay, you can first decide which tours and places you want to focus on.

Plan hikes by difficulty and duration

Easier trails lead from Gundlischwand or Zweilütschinen to Wilderswil, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. Challenging mountain hikes lead to Schynige Platte, Männlichen, Leitere-Horn (Schneit) and Wengen. Distinguishing between the types of tours helps you choose: you can first decide whether you would prefer an easier trail to one of these places or a challenging mountain hike.

The ViaBerna stage through Gundlischwand is 10 km long, takes 5 hours and includes 1,350 metres of ascent. Distance alone shows only part of a tour’s profile: duration and ascent add information about time and elevation, both important for planning your day. A ViaBerna route runs from Isenfluh via Zweilütschinen and Gundlischwand to Schynige Platte. From Gundlischwand, the trail climbs steeply, with many bends, to Alp Schwand. As route conditions may change seasonally, check them before setting out.

Cycling routes and scenery

Cantonal cycling route 6.1 passes Gundlischwand and runs from Thun to Meiringen. It connects the village to Switzerland’s national cycling route network. For orientation, both the numbered route and its endpoints, as well as its connection to the national network, are relevant. In the wider region, there are gravel bike routes such as “Männlichen Viewpoint – View of the Eiger loop from Wengen”. The broader regional hiking landscape also includes peaks with panoramic views and a variety of hiking opportunities.

Gundlischwand lies on the edge of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage area. The upper part of the municipality is home to the Sägistal and a small lake; near Zweilütschinen, the Black Lütschine and White Lütschine rivers meet. These local features offer different reference points for planning your trip: the World Heritage area, the scenery in the upper part of the municipality and the confluence near Zweilütschinen. Depending on your interests, you can focus on hiking options, the Sägistal or the river landscape.

History and practical information

The 1682 smelting furnace has been preserved to this day. The historic site also included a hammer mill. The smelting furnace is a roofless heritage structure. As well as the trails and scenery, a specific historic site and its craft-related context are therefore also highlights.

At ZweilĂĽtschinen station, trains arriving from Interlaken are split: one section continues to Grindelwald and the other to Lauterbrunnen. If you are planning your trip around this rail connection, check the timetable in advance. There is also a barbecue area in the municipality near Schmelzi; its availability may vary by season.
