As a sunny terrace high above Lake Thun, Beatenberg offers panoramic views of the Bernese Oberland Alps, including the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Hikes in Beatenberg also offer views of these same peaks and the lake. The village is also a starting point for excursions in the Lake Thun and Jungfrau regions.
Niederhorn: hiking, trotti-biking and winter activities
Hiking trails on the Niederhorn cross green alpine meadows, heathland and open fir forests. Along the hiking trail, ibexes and chamois can be spotted during many seasons. On Beatenberg’s adventure trail, the first kilometre towards Rischerebödeli passes a stone circle and a large play castle for children.
The Rocky’s Run trotti-bike route runs from Vorsass directly to the Beatenberg station. It is six kilometres long and takes around 20 to 30 minutes. You can cover the Vorsass–Beatenberg section by trotti-bike or on foot. Trotti-bikes are rented at the Vorsass mid-station and returned to Beatenberg station by 6 pm. As route availability, rental and return procedures may change depending on temporary conditions, check these details before your trip.
Skiing is available on the slopes in the Beatenberg-Niederhorn ski area. For a winter alternative, you can rent sledges for a small fee at the mountain station on the Niederhorn. The moderately difficult sledging run is also suitable for beginners; winter operations are weather-dependent.
History, caves and crystals
Beatenberg is first mentioned in church records dating from 1230. The opening of the road to Interlaken in 1865 marked the start of its final transformation from a poor mountain village into a much-visited health resort. The St. Beatus Caves at the foot of Beatenberg’s mountainside form a cave world of fascinating formations.
In Beatenberg, the Crystallos exhibition showcases local crystals as well as crystals and minerals from around the world. It also includes healing stones, water blends and costume jewellery from around the world. Ask about the exhibition’s availability before your visit.
Herbs and fondue as local discoveries
Numerous medicinal herbs grow in the Beatenberg poisonous, medicinal and dragon herb garden; some are marked with numbered signs. Enjoy a dragon tea in the shop or garden café to learn about the plants. This way, you can discover the garden not only through its labelled herbs but also through the explanations about them.
You can also combine an excursion with fondue: pick up the fondue backpack at the railway ticket counter in Beatenberg and take it to a spot of your choice on the Niederhorn. There, you can prepare and eat the fondue. The herb garden and fondue backpack offer different ways to enjoy a break between nature and cultural experiences.
Getting there and choosing where to stay
From Interlaken, Beatenberg is about a 15-minute drive along the road; the distance is approximately ten kilometres by road. For hikes near Beatenberg or Waldegg, you can take the train to Interlaken West and then continue by bus to Beatenberg or Waldegg. Check the timetable before departure. The combination of hiking trails, regional excursions, caves and local history gives you several points to consider when planning: if you choose Beatenberg as your overnight base, think about which of these interests you want to focus on during your stay.
