Le Fuet is a village in the Bernese Jura and belongs to the municipality of Saicourt. At around 841 m above sea level, it lies on the southern slope of Montbautier; the village has retained its agricultural character to this day. When choosing a travel destination, village history and hiking trails come together here: Chapelle du Fuet offers an architectural landmark, while several routes place Le Fuet within a broader network of trails. This means you can decide whether you would like to get to know the village primarily through its architectural history or its location along hiking trails.
Hiking Trails and Regional Routes
The ViaJura follows a tree-lined avenue between two chains of hills towards the hamlet of Le Fuet. On one section, it passes behind a church across a hilly pasture, crosses a perfectly straight canal and continues to the Forêt de Chaindon. The ViaBerna stage turns right before Le Fuet and climbs gently through the forest to the summit of Montbautier.
The trail scenery varies: the ViaJura runs between hill ranges and across pastureland and a canal, while the ViaBerna leads through the forest to the summit. A marked hiking trail climbs to the farming village of Le Fuet. The Chemin des Trois-Lacs passes through Le Fuet and connects the Regio Basiliensis with the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Le Fuet is thus both a destination at the end of a climb and part of a connection between regions.
Chapel and History
Chapelle du Fuet was built in 1938 by Charles Kleiber. It is made of limestone and consists of a rectangular nave and a narrow chancel with a flat apse. The plain masonry, absence of decoration and small bell tower give the building a character reminiscent of Romanesque chapels. The nave and chancel form two differently designed spaces; the flat apse marks the end of the chancel.
In the Middle Ages, Le Fuet and the surrounding villages were within the sphere of influence of Bellelay Abbey. Archaeological remains of a Roman road were discovered between Saicourt and Le Fuet. These two historical connections offer different perspectives: the link with Bellelay dates back to the Middle Ages, while the road remains point to the area’s Roman past.
Location and Getting There
Le Fuet is on the road from Tavannes to Bellelay and is also connected to Reconvilier by road. Bellelay is the starting point for the ViaBerna stage; Bellelay can be reached by bus from the railway stops in Reconvilier. Check the timetable before travelling if you plan to use this connection. This keeps the bus journey relevant to the stage’s starting point in Bellelay, while the road connections indicate Le Fuet’s geographical location.
