The Auguet Bridge tells an unusual story of construction: the covered wooden bridge in Auguet was rebuilt in 1974 after being moved five kilometres downstream. At the same time, it serves a clear purpose: as a crossing over the Aare, it is used by pedestrians and cyclists and connects Muri with Belp. This combination of historic fabric and practical function makes the bridge a distinctive starting point for exploring Muri bei Bern. Other local attractions range from early traces of the area’s history in its church and castle to swimming facilities and trails along the Aare.

Church, castle and local history

The oldest traces of Muri Church date back to the 12th century; the church was formerly dedicated to Saint Michael. The Neo-Gothic church tower dates from 1881 and was donated by Count Pourtalès. The church thus brings together different periods: early medieval traces and a much later tower. Muri Castle also has its own layers of history. Its oldest traces date back to the 16th century; the complex includes an orangery from the 18th or 19th century. Beyond its individual buildings, Muri bei Bern’s history stretches back to 1180. Agriculture and crafts, along with its location on the Aare, fostered the development of the village.

Ferry and swimming facilities

The Bodenacker Ferry is the only ferry between Thun and Bern. Bicycles and prams can be transported on it. Its operation may depend on safety conditions, so check the timetable before your visit.

In addition to its swimming pools, the Aarebad offers the opportunity to swim in the Aare. River swimming is suitable only for strong swimmers. The Aarebad also has a 25-metre pool with a water slide. This makes pool swimming a separate option alongside swimming in the Aare.

Riverside trail and Aare landscape

A riverside trail running inland provides direct access to Muribad and connects Muribad with the Auguet Bridge. Check local trail conditions before your visit. In the wider region, walking and hiking trails follow the Aare and pass through gently rolling hills. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, this offers a scenic focus beyond the area’s architectural history and swimming facilities.

On the right bank of the Aare in Muri, there is a near-natural, ecologically valuable side channel with newly created ponds that provide a habitat for amphibians. The river landscape is therefore not only a place for crossings and swimming, but also a natural environment. Muri bei Bern is also characterised by historic buildings, modern homes and rural life close to the city of Bern.
