From viewpoints in Radelfingen, you can see across the Seeland, the Jura and the Alps; the Mülau-Radelfingenau nature reserve is also located along the Aare. The area is also home to a Reformed church with medieval architectural history and Late Gothic details. Radelfingen is a municipality in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, and combines landscapes and cultural heritage for a stay.

Landscape and Hiking Trails

Radelfingen has hiking trails and unspoilt landscapes for local recreation. The viewpoints offer views of three distinct areas: the Seeland, the Jura and the Alps. When choosing the focus of your stay, you can treat these distant views as a landscape experience in their own right. The nature reserve along the Aare offers a different emphasis: its alluvial forest and river habitats take centre stage.

The Aare and Alluvial Forest

The Mülau-Radelfingenau nature reserve encompasses a stretch of the Aare in the municipality of Radelfingen and also extends into Aarberg. Its centrepiece is an alluvial forest that is periodically flooded. It provides a habitat for beavers and tree frogs; beavers can shape their habitat there freely. The recurring influence of water is part of this natural environment’s character. This makes the Aare landscape and its wildlife habitats markedly different from the distant views at the viewpoints.

Aare Boating and Route

Boating on the Aare is another activity option. The slow current means active paddling is required; conditions vary with the water level. The route described continues past Niederried through a quiet reed area, past the Radelfingen sports ground and then on to Aarberg. Check water and safety conditions before setting out. This makes the route a distinct activity, separate from hiking trails and nature watching.

Church and Architectural History

Traces of Gothic frescoes dating from the second third of the 9th century have been preserved in Radelfingen Church. Its choir is a Late Gothic rectangular choir that does not extend beyond the nave. The paintings in the choir are thought to date from the late 15th century; the ceiling in the nave features Late Gothic flat carvings from the period between 1420 and 1500. These details relate to different parts of the church and show the diversity of its architectural and decorative history.

After renovation work from 1958 to 1965, the church was placed under the protection of the Swiss Confederation. A ramp provides wheelchair access. The church is open daily from 08:00 to 20:00; as opening hours may change, check them before your visit.

Historical Traces and Local Connections

Around 1400, Radelfingen belonged to the medieval County of Oltigen. During the Peasants’ Revolt of 1410, Oltigen Castle was completely destroyed; the county was then sold to the city of Bern. The possible Roman road also points to the area’s long history: an important road is thought to have run from the Seeland through Aarberg and Radelfingen to Frieswil and Wohlen. A watchtower is believed to have stood on the site of today’s church tower.

One historical transport connection is Switzerland’s first postbus route: in 1906 it ran from Bern via Wohlen to Detligen. The references to the county, the presumed Roman road and the early postbus route tell different chapters of history; they do not form a present-day route.

Practical Information

A market is held in Detligen every Thursday from 08:00 to 11:00 opposite the Gasthof Sternen. Check before travelling to confirm that it is still taking place. When planning, you can choose from several clearly distinct interests: hiking trails and viewpoints, the alluvial forest along the Aare, a paddling route, or the church and its history.
