Lyss offers a range of ways to plan a trip: art, cultural trails, historic sites, marked routes and seasonal leisure activities. Two questions can help with your planning: Which topics interest you, and which seasonal activities would you like to include?

Cultural trails and art

RELYEF is Switzerland’s longest relief gallery and is located in the heart of Lyss. The gallery is continually expanded with new artworks. If you make art a focus of your travel plans, you will find a clearly defined cultural highlight here.

#erlebeLyssKultur is a walking trail through the village centre dedicated to the local cultural heritage. The “Weg durch Lyss” (Path through Lyss) focuses on historic buildings and places steeped in history: it includes more than 44 stops to visit on a walk. Some stops have QR codes linking to short films about the locations.

The #erlebeLyss discovery trails also use stops with QR codes. If webpages are open on your mobile device, information appears automatically within 15 metres; there is no need to install an app. These details can help with planning if you would like to access digital information while out and about.

Historical background and landscape

Archaeological remains and cultural-historical traces from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Hallstatt period, Roman period, and Early and High Middle Ages have been documented in Lyss. These include an Etruscan bronze statue from the 6th century BC and the remains of a Carolingian church. Roman bricks and medieval graves are also among the town’s cultural-historical traces.

Lyss is located at the mouth of the Lyssbach valley, on what was formerly the right bank of the Aare. The development of rail traffic is also part of the town’s history, dating back to 1864.

For outdoor activities, there is a forest near the Grien sports centre, a large local recreation area with various marked routes. From the observation tower on Kreuzhöhe, the view extends as far as the Chasseral. The Huguenot Trail from Aarberg to Lyss is part of an international hiking route.

Seasonal leisure activities

Lyss Park Swimming Pool has a paddling pool for toddlers and a leisure pool with a slide. There is also a non-swimmer pool and a swimming pool with accessible entrances, as well as a separate diving pool with an underwater window. The swimming pool also has a beach volleyball court, barbecue facilities, a children’s playground with a sandpit and a large playfield. The pool is open seasonally; check the latest opening information before your visit.

In winter, Seelandhalle Lyss is a venue for ice hockey and curling. During the winter season, it offers public skating and free ice hockey. It is generally open for this from early October to mid-March; changes are announced. If you are planning a specific visit, check for information about possible changes.

This makes for a practical difference when choosing when to travel: the Park Swimming Pool operates seasonally, while Seelandhalle offers its activities in winter. Cultural trails, historic stops and marked routes provide further options for deciding what you would like to experience in Lyss.
