Eptingen combines striking reminders of local history with destinations in a hiking area. Riedfluh Cave Castle tells the story of a medieval site, while Bölcheflue, with its elevation and historical use, offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. There is also a sculpture museum in an old mill, a church with a long history and an insight into how Eptinger mineral water is produced. When planning your visit, you can choose between culture, scenery and a guided tour.
Local History in the Museum, Church and Castle Ruins
The August Suter Museum is dedicated exclusively to sculptor August Suter. His son Claude donated the artist’s estate to the municipality of Eptingen in 1975. Architect Max Schneider established the museum in the old mill; it opened in 1980. If travelling by public transport, bus no. 107 from Sissach is a useful guide: from the Gemeindeplatz stop, it is about 150 metres to the museum. Check the timetable before you travel.
The church also provides a historical reference point: it dates from 1357. Its tower and four bells were added in 1879. The documented history of the castle ruins reaches further back. Witwald Castle was a seat of the Lords of Eptingen and was probably founded in the 13th century. Its visible remains of masonry were restored in 2018 to preserve the structure as an important historic building and a cultural landmark of the municipality.
Riedfluh: Cave Castle with an Archaeological History
Riedfluh, also known as Haselburg, is an unusual cave castle ruin. Archaeological investigations date its construction to around 1050. At the time, decorative elements found at the site were otherwise mainly used in royal palatine buildings—palace complexes resembling castles. A fire must have raged at Riedfluh around 1200; afterwards, the site was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Its remains of masonry were excavated archaeologically and conserved between 1981 and 1983.
The cave castle is in the municipality of Eptingen, on the southeast slope of Ränggen hill below a steep rock face, and can be reached by footpath. The ruin is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. From the Edelweiss bus stop, it is about 1.7 kilometres, or around 30 minutes on foot. Treat this walking time as an estimate; path conditions may vary.
High-Elevation Destinations and Tours Around Eptingen
Bölcheflue reaches 1,098.9 metres and lies in a hiking area between Eptingen, Waldenburg and Langenbruck. One route starts from a car park with limited spaces below Chilchzimmer Saddle and continues uphill on foot; the ascent takes about 15 minutes. If you plan to use this route, take the limited number of parking spaces into account and check availability before setting out. During the First World War, Bölcheflue was used as an observation post.
Another way to get a sense of the surrounding area is the Diegtertal Tour: starting in Eptingen, it leads through the forest to Dietisberg. The route has steep ascents and descents before and after Eptingen. These details offer a practical guide to the route profile, but do not replace checking your own plans and current conditions.
Mineral Spring and Scenery
You can visit the production facilities at the Eptingen mineral spring. After a guided tour, you can book an apéritif if you wish; a reservation is required. Check the reservation details in advance. The source of Eptinger mineral water and the bottling plant of Mineralquelle Eptingen AG are located in Eptingen. The company has been bottling mineral water since 1900.
Eptingen lies at the upper end of the Diegter Valley, surrounded by the Folded Jura. Together with the high-elevation destinations, this makes for a blend of local history and scenery: for a day trip, you can focus on historic sites or make a tour or ascent the main activity. Walking times to Riedfluh and Bölcheflue differ considerably; when planning, also bear in mind that Riedfluh ruin can only be viewed from the outside.
