Waldenburg owes its location to a bottleneck: the town was established where Richtifluh and Gerstelfluh narrow the valley floor of the Vordere Frenke and where the road over the Upper Hauenstein could be closed off. The Upper Gate of the walled settlement was strategically located and made it possible to collect a toll. Here, the landscape, trade and defensive function come together in the built environment. The historic townscape includes the Stedtli, a church, a city gate and other historic buildings. They reveal different layers of the town’s history.

Gates, the rectory and architectural history

The Upper Gate survived after the Lower Gate was demolished in 1840. Two years later, the Untere Wacht was rebuilt; it is one of the town’s most remarkable surviving buildings. The demolition of one gate and the construction of the guardhouse mark different chapters of the same local history. The rectory also connects several eras: it was mentioned as a stone house as early as 1244 and is considered a former noble residence as well as one of the oldest buildings in the town of Waldenburg. Its beam ceiling features colourful vine paintings dating from the second half of the 17th century. The early mention and the much later paintings make the time gap between the building’s construction and its decoration tangible. The church features stained-glass windows by Jacques Düblin.

Another change of use concerns the former district court, which has been converted into a residential and cultural centre. During the renovation, the wall enclosing the courtyard was lowered on the street side to give it a more public character. This shows that the change is reflected not only in the building itself, but also in how the courtyard is presented to the street.

The castle ruins above the town

The ruins of Waldenburg Castle lie above the medieval town. Together with the town and the lower castle, they formed a defensive barrier at the Hauenstein Pass. The ruins are therefore part of a historic line of defence, not just a standalone structure. From the tower, panoramic views stretch across the Waldenburg Valley and the Folded Jura. A municipal notice dated 27 June 2025 reported that the upper section was closed until further notice due to the risk of falling rocks. Check current access arrangements before your visit.

A museum and brewery experiences at the Leue

In the basement of the Leue restaurant, the Solex Museum displays around two dozen Velosolex models dating from 1947 to 1985. While renovation work is underway, the museum can currently be visited only as part of a tour booked in advance; admission is free. Engibeer has been brewing its own beer in the Leue’s basement since 2020, serving it in the restaurant. Once or twice a year, Engibeer holds brewery tours with beer tastings; the provider announces the dates. This brings together the history of technology and local brewing culture under one roof, although the two experiences are different: the museum displays a vehicle collection, while the brewery tours focus on beer.

The swimming pool and November market

Waldenburg’s range of experiences also includes the Schwimmbi swimming pool. It has a paddling pool, a non-swimmer pool and a 25-metre swimming pool, as well as a diving tower with one-metre and three-metre springboards. A spacious sunbathing lawn overlooking the valley rounds out the facilities. This provides a water-based attraction alongside the historic buildings.

The Waldenburg Christmas market takes place every year on the last Saturday in November. The announced date for the 2026 edition is 28 November. If the market is important to your trip, check the event date in advance. The Waldenburg Railway is also part of the town’s history: it opened as a narrow-gauge railway in 1880. Together, these places and events offer different ways to experience Waldenburg—from the town’s architectural history and the views from the castle ruins to the museum, brewery tour, swimming pool and market.
