Reute lies above the Rhine Valley in an open hilly landscape, with views of the Rhine Valley and Lake Constance. Walking and hiking trails lead through the hills in Reute and the surrounding area. For your choice of route, there is a circular trail in Mohren and named hikes with different routes.

Hiking in Reute and Mohren

The municipality has a well-developed network of hiking trails. The trails are very well signposted and offer routes for different levels. Trail conditions and signposting can change, so check the latest route information before setting out.

The leisurely circular trail in Mohren starts either at the Bellevue postbus stop or at the Sonnenschein nursing home in Mohren. It is also suitable for outings with children. Choose the starting point to suit your plans and check the current route in advance.

The hike “Through the hilly Appenzell Vorderland” reaches the village of Reute after descending to Eschenmoos and crossing the Fallbach stream. The hike “Field, Forest and Meadow Trails in the Border Area” takes a different route: it leads from Reute down to Berneck and back via Steingocht. Along this route, meadows alternate with forests featuring babbling streams in the ravines and field paths. The direction is therefore another difference to consider when choosing: on one hike, you reach Reute after the described sections of the route; on the other, it is the starting point.

Cycling as another focus

Reute is part of the bike route network. Cycling is therefore another option alongside the hikes described here. As route networks can change, check the current route before planning a specific ride.

History in the church and landscape

Documentary references to the Reute area date back to the 14th century. At that time, it was shaped primarily by agriculture and scattered settlements. Traditional scattered settlements and chapels in Reute and the surrounding area continue to bring the region’s history to life today.

In Reute Church, the painted, five-sided coffered ceiling, created in 1706, depicts a blue starry sky. The current organ dates from 1954 and has 16 sounding stops. The pulpit was made by local craftsmen Johannes Rohner and Ulrich Bänziger. If you would like to see the interior, enquire in advance about visiting arrangements.

Getting here and regional products

For the hike “Field, Forest and Meadow Trails in the Border Area,” postbuses run from Heiden or Heerbrugg to Reute, Dorf stop. Check the timetable before travelling, as departure times may change.

In the area covered by this hike, apples and pears are used to make Appenzeller Bschorle, while grapes are used to make Rheintaler wine. These two products add a regional culinary connection to the descriptions of the landscape and hikes.
