Stein lies in the Fricktal on the High Rhine, on the border with Germany. Two clear themes come together here for planning a trip: the historic wooden bridge over the Rhine and various ways to spend time outdoors—on foot, by bike or in natural settings.

The Wooden Bridge as a Landmark

The wooden bridge connects Stein with Bad Säckingen in Germany. Motorized traffic is not permitted on it. At 203.7 metres long, it is considered the longest covered wooden bridge in Europe and is included on the list of Aargau cultural assets of national importance. Its construction history is also part of the townscape: the stone piers from the reconstruction of the historic wooden bridge in 1573 have survived to this day. The bridge therefore offers a tangible starting point for anyone interested in architectural history and the cultural heritage of the High Rhine.

Hiking and Walking along the High Rhine

The High Rhine Riverside Circular Trail runs from Grenzach-Wyhlen and Kaiseraugst to Bad Säckingen and Stein. It is a hiking trail in two countries and part of the Rheinliebe route. Those interested in longer walks will find a cross-regional route here that passes through several towns along the High Rhine. Within Stein, there is also a network of field paths between Schaffhauserstrasse, Münchwilerstrasse and Industriestrasse, inviting visitors to go for a walk.

The town map can also help with finding your way around: it shows routes for cyclists and pedestrians. This lets you plan according to your preferred mode of travel, without limiting your walk or bike ride to a single route.

Nature at Bustelbach

The Bustelbach Biotope nature reserve includes ponds, stone piles and a wild bee hotel. It also serves as a peaceful place for local recreation. The Bustelbach stream and an adjacent meadow have been restored to a more natural state; there are benches and an observation platform. The area therefore focuses both on habitats and nature conservation, and on opportunities to take a quiet break. The biotope offers a different focus from the cross-border hiking route or the historic wooden bridge.

Exercise and Cycling

The Vita Parcours in Stein is 2.5 kilometres long and has 15 stations with exercises for endurance, flexibility and strength. For an active workout, there are also the Bustelbach sports facilities, which offer tennis, badminton, volleyball, beach volleyball, floorball and mini golf. These specific details about distances, stations and sports make it easy to distinguish between the available exercise options.

Since May 2026, Stein has been connected to a cross-border PubliBike bike-sharing system for the High Rhine region. The system launched as a three-year pilot project. During the pilot, e-bikes and regular bicycles can be rented at Bahnhofweg and returned to any PubliBike station in the High Rhine network or in Basel. The High Rhine network includes Kaiseraugst, Rheinfelden (CH), Rheinfelden (D), Stein, Bad Säckingen, as well as Laufenburg (CH) and Laufenburg (D). Availability depends on the current operation of the pilot project; check before setting off.
