Wölflinswil combines a historic village centre with trails across the high plateaus of the Jura. Steep slopes surround the village in the cuesta landscape of the Tabular and Folded Jura; the municipal area is part of Jurapark Aargau. There are several ways to shape your stay: explore the village’s architectural history, visit the parish garden or hike one of the routes described here.

Village History Between the Church and the Mill

Wölflinswil first appears in a 1180 land register belonging to the Counts of Homberg; the church is also mentioned for the first time in this context. The parish church of St. Mauritius stands on an extensive hill spur and rises above the village rooftops. It is a Neoclassical hall church with a recessed round choir and a Late Gothic bell tower with a distinctive helmet-shaped roof. During the interior restoration in 2014, the choir’s stained-glass windows from 1894 were reinstalled. The historic settlement core is considered a site of national importance because of its distinctive architectural and historical qualities.

For centuries, the former Alte Mühle (Old Mill) marked the end of the historic settlement core. Parts of the mill’s grinding mechanism and crown wheel have been preserved, along with an overshot wooden waterwheel with an iron hub and its associated wooden flume. Another landmark in the village is the Alte Schmitte (Old Smithy): together with its adjoining barn and the «Ochsen» inn, it occupies a central position that helps shape the square in the star-shaped village layout.

Spring Custom and Autumn Market

Eierlesen is an ancient spring custom held every year on the first Sunday in May. There are 100 eggs along each of two running courses, spaced 50 centimetres apart. Competitors collect them and throw them into tubs filled with chaff. The event has its own place in the village calendar.

The traditional autumn market has been held on the village square every year on the last Saturday in October since 1982. Its offering is subject to a clear local rule: only products grown, made or at least refined in Wölflinswil may be sold. If you would like to include either event in your trip, check the dates for your travel period.

Trails Through the Landscape and Village History

The Two-Village Circular Trail connects Wölflinswil and Oberhof on a route of approximately eight kilometres. You can start and finish at Wölflinswil village square or at Adlerplatz in Oberhof; the trail can be walked in either direction. The route offers lovely views and information about nature and culture. Facilities along the way include playgrounds, a stream footbath and a fire pit. From the «Oberhof, Adlerplatz» and «Wölflinswil, Dorfplatz» stops, the trail is signposted with white markers.

The Iron Trail tells a different story: it follows the traces of the centuries-long iron ore mining between Wölflinswil and Herznach. With a little luck, you may find fossils along the trail. While the Two-Village Circular Trail links two villages on a loop of approximately eight kilometres, the Iron Trail follows a historical theme.

Parish Garden and Nature Features

Wölflinswil Parish Garden is open to visitors free of charge all year round and can be reached in just a few minutes on foot from the village square and the bus stop there. You can discover 17 nature features in a flower meadow. They provide native animals and plants with habitat, food and shelter. Hiking trails also cross the high plateaus around Wölflinswil, so you can combine a visit to the garden with time spent in the surrounding landscape.

Getting There and Village Amenities

A regular PostBus service connects Wölflinswil to Aarau and Frick via Benkerjoch. The A3 motorway junction at Frick is approximately eight kilometres away. If travelling by PostBus, check the timetable for your travel date. The village has various shops, a cash machine and a post office inside the Volg supermarket. In summer, Wölflinswil’s outdoor swimming pool is a great place to relax.
