Kungshamn brings together a bathing spot with rocky and sandy areas, the starting point of a Kuststigen stage, local history and boat connections. When choosing where to stay, itâs worth first considering which of these themes you want your days to focus on: swimming and trails, church and art history, or trips across the water.
TÄngen, the park and Kuststigen
TÄngen bathing spot consists of rocky bathing areas with a sandy beach, jetties with swimming ladders and an accessible ramp. TÄngenparken offers a different focus: its facilities include lawns, plantings, a playground and a converted stage. Together, the bathing spot and park provide two different points of reference for planning a day in Kungshamn.
For those who also want to plan a walk, the bus station offers a useful reference point: it is about 800 metres from the starting point of the KungshamnâTullboden stage of Kuststigen.
Church history from the 18th to the 20th century
The history of churches in Kungshamn dates back to 1780. At that time, the town got its first church after the population grew considerably during the herring season and the mother church in Askum became too small. The first place of worship was the red-painted wooden church Gustav Adolphs Capell. It stood in the old cemetery, where a memorial stone stands today.
The present stone church, Kungshamns kyrka, was inaugurated in 1904. Its predecessor, the wooden church, had been destroyed by fire in 1901. Those interested in local history can therefore explore two distinct periods: the first church built in the 18th century and the creation of the present building at the beginning of the 20th century.
Art in Kungshamn
Since 1957, Mollbrinks has presented art exhibitions in Kungshamn every summer. Another art venue is the gallery at TÄngenpirens Konst & Hantverk, which displays works by seven artists in a range of techniques. The shop is located in an authentic harbour setting on FisketÄngen in Kungshamn.
There are two different points of reference for the time of year and the focus on art: summer is part of Mollbrinksâ recurring exhibition programme, while the gallery is defined by its seven artists and the variety of techniques on display. Both complement the church history with a look at art in present-day Kungshamn.
Boat connections and seasonal schedules
HĂ„llöexpressen runs from BĂ€ckevikstorget in central Kungshamn to the island of HĂ„llö. Since service information varies by season, itâs a good idea to check the current timetable before setting off. HĂ„llöexpressenâs M/S Missouri has room for 53 passengers.
In summer, ZitabÄtarna run from the harbour in Kungshamn to Smögenbryggan about every half hour. This frequency is also seasonal, so check the current timetable before travelling. ZitabÄtarna began operating water taxis in Kungshamn in 1927. The company also organises mackerel fishing in late summer and autumn. The seasonal highlights therefore differ: the connection to Smögenbryggan is a summer service, while mackerel fishing takes place later in the year.
