Kvarnbyn tells the story of Mölndal’s industrial past; hiking trails, forests and heathlands offer further perspectives on the landscape. In Mölndal, cultural discoveries sit alongside a wide range of ways to enjoy the outdoors.
Trails for a Range of Interests
The Bohusleden runs for 26 kilometres through the entire municipality of Mölndal and continues northwards. Two of its 27 stages pass through the municipality. Check the stage descriptions before setting out, as information about trails and signage may change.
For a circular hike in Bunketorp in Lindome, try the Djursjöleden: the trail is 20 kilometres long, runs through lowland terrain and is suitable for beginners. There are several shelters and barbecue areas along the route. Check local restrictions before setting out; facilities and the availability of firewood may change.
Rådasjön runt offers a different experience: the marked, twelve-kilometre circular route runs mostly along gravelled nature trails through deciduous woodland near the lake. However, some sections follow roads or residential paths. In the central parts of Mölndal, Hälsans stig combines urban culture and green spaces over about six kilometres; this walking and fitness trail is a shorter option than the longer routes.
Änggårdsbergen also has a well-developed network of trails. Signs show distances to the various areas, helping you choose your route. Those interested in trees will find an arboretum there with exotic species from various parts of the Northern Hemisphere; its collection is considered unique and worth seeing in Sweden. From the Bredfjället viewpoint, you can see across the western parts of Gothenburg.
Heathlands, Birds and Wooded Landscapes
Sandsjöbacka Nature Reserve is known for its extensive heathlands. The marked Sandsjöbackaleden runs north to south through the part of the reserve located in Mölndals stad. Up to 150 bird species can be observed in the nature reserve; which species you may see varies by season and year.
The shallow Hårssjön, where there is a birdwatching tower, is also a good spot for birdwatching. Sightings vary by season. If you prefer to explore nature by bike, be sure to follow Mölndal’s rules: cycling in nature is permitted only on designated paths and trails and during certain periods.
Industrial History and Cultural Sites
Kvarnbyn is considered the industrial-historical birthplace of Mölndal and a cultural environment of national interest. Information boards along the rapids and at the buildings tell its story. The Mölndalsfallen waterfalls have a drop of 48 metres and are illuminated at night. If you want to see the lighting, check the current lighting arrangements before your visit.
Gunnebo also brings architecture and landscape together. Gunnebo Slott was built between 1784 and 1796; it was commissioned by Gothenburg merchant John Hall the Elder and designed by architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg. Gunnebo kulturreservat preserves a well-preserved 18th-century landscape. Visitors can stroll through the historic gardens, but should check access and paths before visiting. Gunnebo Slott och Trädgårdar offers guided tours of the castle and its green cultural heritage landscape year-round.
The collections at Mölndals stadsmuseum include almost 40,000 images and objects. You can also discover its history through the collections. Safjället adds to the cultural and nature experiences with graves from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as the remains of a hillfort. This wooded plateau in Mölndal has numerous trails and paths; archaeological remains should be left undisturbed.
Families looking for things to do can visit Åbybadet, which has a family area with two splash pools and four water slides. As facilities and operating arrangements may change, check the current conditions before your visit.
Getting Around During Your Stay
