A three-kilometre hiking route along Lake Öresjön and the preserved spinning-mill setting in Rydal reveal two sides of Mark: nature and scenic views, and textile history. The landscape is characterised by deep forests, lakes and winding gravel roads. When planning, you can choose by trail length, landscape or cultural attractions—and take the different highlights of each place into account.

Water, Forest and Scenic Views

From the summit of Hyltenäs kulle, the view stretches far across the surrounding landscape. At the foot of the hill begins a three-kilometre hiking route that follows Lake Öresjön through leafy mixed forest. Along the way, there are wind shelters and a place to swim. This route combines lakeshore, forest and scenic views without being confused with longer hiking trails.

Ramsholmens kulturreservat offers walks through a varied cultural landscape of oak pastures and grazing land, with views of Lake Öresjön. Ramhultafallet Nature Reserve extends for just over 1.2 kilometres along the northwestern shore of Lake Lygnern. The waterfall is over 50 metres high and is considered one of Sweden’s tallest. Gravel paths, platforms near the waterfall and an accessible viewpoint shape the visitor area.

You can also plan your journey there: From Sätila, drive about four kilometres towards Fjärås, then follow the signs from Fjäråsvägen. There is a car park in the lower area reserved for people with disabilities and families with pushchairs. From Kinna or Skene, the drive to Hyltenäs kulle goes through Örby towards Torestorp; the destination is also signposted from Route 41 at Sundholmen. Check the signs before setting off.

Choose Hiking Trails by Length and Theme

The trails vary considerably in length. Flohult is 6.6 kilometres long, suitable for pushchairs and starts at Lygnevi sports ground. In Rydal, an eight-kilometre route circles Lake Mjögasjön; along the way, you’ll notice soft moss, lake views and sturdy tree trunks. Viskastigen stretches for 18 kilometres between Agnbäck in the south and Öresten, just before Skene, in the north. Parts of the route follow a medieval road that ran from Halland through Västergötland and on to the capital.

For longer hikes, there are other routes to choose from: the 40-kilometre Hyssnaleden passes through Mark Municipality in southern Västsverige and through the beech forests of Stomsås Nature Reserve. The 50-kilometre Kurirleden starts at Örestens fästning outside Örby and ends at Kinnahus in Östra Frölunda. Its name reflects the possibility that, 600 to 700 years ago, there was a road along which couriers rode on horseback to carry mail between two fortresses. The different route lengths and historical connections offer practical guidance when choosing a tour.

Rydal: Textile History and Nature Trails

Rydals museum presents exhibitions in a historic industrial setting regarded as Sweden’s best-preserved spinning-mill environment. The permanent exhibition TEXTIL MARK explores the history of Rydal and the textile district of Mark through projections, animation, sound and lighting, and interactive elements. The preserved village includes workers’ housing, a schoolhouse, the manager’s residence, a power station and a spinning mill. The industrial character is considered nationally significant, and some of the buildings are protected historic structures.

A marked 750-metre historical trail uses information boards to tell the story of the people and buildings in the area. It is partially adapted for accessibility. Two buildings along the route can be opened with a key, which is available to borrow from the museum. Rydal also has a nature area with several hiking trails, as well as opportunities for swimming, fishing and canoeing. If you’d like to combine a museum visit with time outdoors, check the museum’s current opening hours in advance.

Explore Mark by Bike

For a cycling trip, Hyssnaturen offers a 38-kilometre route along roads around Kinna, Rydal and Hyssna. The landscape alternates between open plains and deep forests. Another, 41-kilometre loop passes through Torestorp, Älekulla and Öxabäck; the route highlights beautiful views, peaceful scenery and cultural history. Förläggargårdsturen is a cultural-history cycling tour through the textile heritage landscape of Sjuhärad.

Farm shops selling local produce such as eggs, honey, meat, potatoes, mushrooms and seasonal vegetables are ideal for regional shopping. Bakeries offer fresh sourdough bread and freshly baked cinnamon buns. As individual businesses’ offerings may change, check in advance before setting off.
