Church history, pastureland and prehistoric remains shape Harestad, along with the distinctive valley landscape along the Nordre älv. Harestads kyrka and the Kyrkeby and Prillan pastures provide specific points of reference. Rocky, rugged areas with valleys broaden the view beyond the individual fields. Those interested in cultural history and landscape can explore Harestad at several scales, from details of the church furnishings to archaeological traces.

Church history and furnishings

Harestads kyrka stands on a site where a church has existed for at least 800 years. This long continuity should be distinguished from the individual furnishings: the soapstone baptismal font dates from the 12th century, while the altar sculptures were made in the Netherlands in the 15th century. The same church site thus brings together evidence from different centuries. For a cultural and historical understanding, both the length of the church’s history at this site and the specific materials, dates and origins of the altar figures are of interest.

Kyrkeby and Prillan: two pastures

West of the church lies Kyrkeby, an 11-hectare pasture with trees and shrubs. An Iron Age burial ground is located there, along with Bronze Age rock carvings. A municipal field inventory from 1988 also records two small ponds at Kyrkeby. This named area therefore brings together different landscape features and remains from two prehistoric periods.

South of Harestads kyrka lies Prillan, a 4.4-hectare open pasture with trees and shrubs. The size comparison with Kyrkeby is clear: Prillan covers 4.4 hectares, while Kyrkeby covers 11 hectares. Both areas have trees and shrubs; Prillan is additionally described as open. The directional references locate both areas in relation to the church, while the hectare figures make their different sizes directly comparable.

Landscape and prehistoric traces

The landscape description extends beyond the named pastures: Harestad includes a distinctive valley landscape along the Nordre älv and rugged rocky areas with valleys. Two levels of observation are thus presented side by side: specific areas with stated sizes, and a broader description of the valley and rocky terrain. This shift in scale helps place the individual pastures in relation to the wider character of the landscape.

One precisely identified rock carving is Harestad 190:1 (L1969:1681). It is visible above ground, confirmed in the field and located in the parish of Harestad. The remains can also be placed in a chronological context: Bronze Age rock carvings and the Iron Age burial ground are complemented by the church site’s history of at least 800 years and furnishings from the 12th and 15th centuries. Harestad thus brings together archaeological traces from different periods, a long church history and specific examples of medieval furnishings.
