Styrsö brings together a rocky coastline, trails, swimming spots and maritime local history. When looking for accommodation, you might first consider whether you want to focus your stay on trails and views, swimming and fishing, or historic village scenery.

Rocky Coastline, Views and Trails

Styrsö’s coastal scenery is varied and shaped by rocks. Stora Rös is 60 metres above sea level and the highest point in the archipelago. From there, the view stretches across three landscapes in western Sweden. Stora Rös is also a Bronze Age burial mound. Here, a viewpoint and an archaeological site come together, letting you enjoy the landscape while gaining an insight into early history.

Styrsö has nature trails as well as marked routes for walking and jogging. Nature trails lead to Brännholmsviken and Styrsö Skäret; cleared paths through the outer areas also lead to Brännholmsviken. The archipelago’s first church stood there. However, the site does not date from the Viking Age, even though the name “Vikingakyrkogården” (“Viking Cemetery”) might suggest otherwise. Check local trail conditions if you plan to visit these places.

Fishing can also be planned year-round: Styrsö offers good fishing opportunities throughout the year.

Swimming Spots and Fishing

At Styrsö Uttervik, there is a small bay for younger children, as well as a bathing island with a bathing platform and swimming ladders. The site is 1.2 kilometres from the Styrsö Tången stop; check local travel conditions before your visit. Seasonal services may change. In Styrsö Bratten, swimming is available from the beach and a bathing jetty about 300 metres from the ferry terminal. Uttervik offers a small bay and bathing island, while Bratten has a beach and bathing jetty—a practical difference to consider when choosing where to swim.

Local History and Art

The island’s history reflects different aspects of its maritime heritage. Tången is a traditional fishing village with the densely packed buildings typical of the archipelago. Bratten developed into a seaside resort in the second half of the 19th century, with bathhouses, a restaurant, a hotel and summer houses. These facilities are part of its history from that period. Byn is the oldest settlement on Styrsö and was once the island’s historic centre. Well-preserved boatyards in Halsvik remain visible traces of its historic maritime heyday.

Öbergska House dates from 1812; Öbergska Gallery is on the second floor of the building. The Styrsö Art Tour has been held annually since 2008. Local artists from Styrsö and Donsö exhibit their work. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the dates for your travel period.

Getting There and Finding Your Way

Public passenger boats operated by Styrsöbolaget serve Styrsö year-round; frequency and operating arrangements may change. The full Stenpiren–Styrsö–Donsö–Vrångö boat route takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes. As this is the duration of the entire route, check the timetable for your specific journey before travelling.

Styrsö Church is closest to the Styrsö Bratten stop. As stop arrangements may change, check the current stop information before your visit.
