Rådanefors brings together the history of an ironworks and a landscape shaped by lakes. When choosing a destination, two distinct attractions sit side by side here: surviving traces of industrial history and routes through the area's waterways.

Rådanefors Ironworks

The ruins of the ironworks founded by Jöns Kock have been preserved in Rådanefors. He established Rådanefors bruk at a waterfall between Långhalmen and Rådanesjön. The location between the two lakes is therefore directly connected to the history of the works. Until it closed in 1895, the operation included, among other things, Lancashire forging and a foundry; it also produced railway carriages and horseshoe nails.

A ruin in the narrow strait between Rådanesjön and Långhalmen is also connected with the ironworks. It appears on a map from 1805. None of the works' former operational buildings have survived. The former manor house, Rådanefors herrgård, has been preserved and dates from around 1800. The surviving ruins and the manor house thus offer glimpses of different aspects of local history: industrial activity and the former manor house.

Lakes, open land and a natural monument

Numerous lakes shape the landscape around Rådanefors. In places, open farmland surrounds the lakes and contributes to the scenery. The area's waterway history is also part of the picture: in the past, a lake in the narrow strait between Rådanesjön and Långhalmen had a different outlet.

Rådanefors lies between the two large recreational areas of Ödeborgsfjället and Kroppefjäll. The area is also of local and regional interest for outdoor recreation. One specific natural monument in the area is Dalslandseken, a very old oak. It stands near the public road between Rådanefors and Stigen and is protected as a natural monument; the protection was approved in 1929.

Flottarleden and a nature reserve

Flottarleden runs from Rådanesjön through Gruksviken and onward to Rådanefors; the route's eastern endpoint is also in the village. Its route therefore connects the lakes, Gruksviken and Rådanefors. If you plan your trip around waterways and routes, you will find a direct connection to the landscape here, without losing sight of the ironworks history.

The Sjöbotten Nature Reserve is nearby. A gravel access road is located about 1 km north of Rådanefors; from there, access continues along about 2 km of gravel road.

Visiting and planning

Pidis Lada is a well-stocked flea market in Rådanefors, between Färgelanda and Frändefors. Opening information is maintained separately on Facebook; check it before your visit. This lets you include the flea market as a separate stop without assuming its opening hours.

If swimming is part of your plans, bear in mind Färgelanda Municipality's decision to discontinue the Rådanefors bathing area from 2025. This information is relevant when planning a stay focused on the water. The ironworks history, lakeside landscape, route and natural monument also offer different ways to shape your stay around your own interests.
