In Ödeborg, preserved traces of industrial history meet church architecture, older cultural heritage and trails for walking or cycling. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between these different highlights: the history of Ödeborgs bruk can be traced through several milestones, while the trails each offer their own lengths, routes or activities.

Ödeborgs bruk and its history

Ödeborgs bruk was founded in 1898 by a Norwegian company led by Swedish manager Victor Andersson. Its aim was to manufacture nails and bricks. At first, there was a separate brickworks and a separate nail factory; in 1911, the two were combined under the name Ödeborgs bruks aktiebolag. The surviving parts of the old Ödeborgs bruk include buildings, a former manager’s villa and workers’ housing.

The former manager’s villa was built in 1902 on the west side of the Valboån. The area of Ödeborgs bruk was designated an environment of cultural-historical value in 1975. These milestones help place the surviving industrial setting in time: its founding, the merger, the construction of the villa and the later cultural-historical designation mark different periods in its history.

Church, museum and older traces

Ödeborgs kyrka also reflects several building phases. Its oldest parts date from the 13th century. In 1699, the church was extended and received its present three-sided chancel; the tower was completed in 1769. This places its medieval origins, its 17th-century extension and the later tower in a clear chronological sequence.

Ödeborgs fornsal houses more than 6,000 objects from Dalsland dating from the pre-industrial era. The museum building was completed in 1913. Visits are possible by prior arrangement only; check in advance whether a visit is possible on your chosen date. This helps distinguish what belongs to the collection from the arrangements required for a visit.

At Brötegården, there are Bronze Age rock carvings. The site is also an open-air museum on a farm, with objects from the farm and surrounding area. From 1700 to 1876, Brötegården was the official residence of the Häradshövding (district judge) of Valbo Härad. An Iron Age burial ground is located on Museikullen. These places offer different points of interest if you are curious about traces from various periods.

Trails and nature around Ödeborg

For a route with a specified length, the Kyrkstigen is a useful reference: it is 9 km long and starts or ends at Ödeborgs kyrka. By contrast, the walking and cycling path between Ödeborg and Färgelanda follows the old Lelångebanan railway line and offers opportunities for walking and cycling. The descriptions therefore differ in length and character: one is a 9 km trail associated with the church, the other a route along the former railway line for walking and cycling.

Ödeborgsfjället, a southern spur of Kroppefjäll, offers opportunities for walks in the forest and countryside. Ödeborgsfjället also has several hiking trails and small lakes where you can swim. Ödeborg’s wetland is known for its diverse birdlife. If you would like to focus your stay more on nature, you’ll find several options here: walks, hiking trails, swimming in small lakes and birdwatching in the wetland.

Around Brötegårdssjön, the trails are wide, easy to walk on and readily accessible; they are particularly suitable for strollers and toddlers. This is a practical option for anyone looking for a trail with these features. When choosing between the trails, you can compare the length and route of the Kyrkstigen or the Lelångebanan route with the qualities of the trails at Brötegårdssjön and the nature options on Ödeborgsfjället.
