From pig iron to finished railway wheels, Surahammar offers a glimpse of an entire production chain. Surahammars Bruksmuseum makes industrial history a tangible part of a visit; nearby, you’ll also find a Neo-Romantic church, historic buildings and waterside nature destinations. You can tailor your stay more towards cultural heritage or trails and scenery, rather than giving equal weight to every theme.
Industrial history, from the workshop building to the carriage shed
Surahammars Bruksmuseum is housed in a workshop building where some of the equipment has been preserved in its original location. The exhibition traces the entire production chain, from pig iron to finished railway wheels. A guided tour lasts about an hour. This specific time frame can help you fit a museum visit into your day’s plans.
The carriage shed houses the patron’s ceremonial carriage, the “Kupén” carriage from 1900, a hearse, and the Vaulunder locomotive with two carriages. Motorcykelmuseet Gyllene Hjulet offers a different perspective: it displays motorcycles from the early 20th century through the 1970s, with around 120 objects on view. If you’re interested in technological development, you can also find a link to local history beyond the museums: in 1897, engineer Gustav Eriksson built Sweden’s first internal combustion engine car in Surahammar.
Church, art and historic buildings
Sura kyrka stands on a rise beside the Strömsholms Canal. It was built between 1890 and 1892 in the Neo-Romantic style, based on designs by architect Gustaf Pettersson, and was inaugurated by Bishop Gottfrid Billing. The interior also offers a connection to local history: the chancel painting by Nils Aron Berge was completed in 1956 and contains several hundred figures, including local residents and the ironworks.
Stenhuset was built in 1847 as a home for six blacksmith families. Surahammars Hembygdsgård, on the Kolbäcksån, consists of three buildings relocated here. These places complement the museum collections with stories of domestic life and architecture. Surahammar’s oldest park is Bruksparken, adding a public green space to the town’s buildings and exhibitions as another point of interest.
Trails, protected areas and outdoor activities
Surahammars Golfklubb has an 18-hole parkland course on the northern approach to Surahammar. The mountain bike trails at Lindmuren start at the golf club. Another hiking option is stage 8 of Bruksleden, which passes the outskirts of Surahammar after about five kilometres. Rövalls- och Stingsmossen Nature Reserve can only be reached on foot via Bruksleden; starting points are Surahammars Golfklubb to the south or Ramnäs to the west. Check parking conditions before you travel.
Gnien, in the surroundings of Surahammar, is a bird sanctuary. Here, the Kolbäcksån widens into a lake. In spring and autumn, numerous swans, ducks and wading birds may stop at Gnien, though sightings are not guaranteed. Even during the seasonal restrictions in force there, visits to the birdwatching tower and boat and canoe trips through the protected area are permitted.
Kohagen Nature Reserve has three rest areas in the surrounding area, with fire pits and views of the Kolbäcksån. About two kilometres north of the centre is Campingbadet at Magsjön. Facilities there include jetties, a diving tower or diving trampoline, streetball, a beach volleyball court and a barbecue area. The entire historic trail in Surahammar is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs.
