Ramnäs combines preserved industrial history with walks, birdwatching and a paddling route to Surahammar. The Ramnäs bruksområde is home to historic industrial buildings and Café Kusken; other stops range from the church to nature areas. You can plan your stay around cultural history, outdoor activities or wildlife watching.

Industrial history and historic buildings

The old Kättingsmedjan smithy has been preserved in the Ramnäs bruksområde. Järnboden is a 100-metre-long wooden building where bar iron was stored before being transported onwards in Sweden and around the world. Café Kusken is also located in this area. The smithy and the warehouse offer different insights into the history of the industrial area.

Ramnäs kyrka was built in the early 15th century by farmers from Ramnäs as a small, single-nave stone church. It has no chancel, sacristy or side aisles. The Hembygdsgården Söderhammar building dates from 1897. Of three similar buildings in the area, it is the only one that has survived.

Skyltvandringen is a walk where visitors learn about the history of various places through images and easy-to-understand Swedish texts. The combination of images and text puts local history at the centre and takes visitors beyond individual buildings to several stops.

Walks, nature and birdwatching

Spången is a roughly 160-metre-long boardwalk between the industrial area and the workers’ cottage Kungshammar on Bergslagsvägen. The area is important for overwintering dippers. As well as connecting the two places mentioned, Spången is therefore a point of interest for winter wildlife watching.

The Ramnässkogen Nature Reserve is within walking distance of Ramnäs. Another birdwatching destination is the Gnien Nature Reserve: it is on section 6, shortly after leaving Ramnäs, and is considered a popular birdwatching spot. The two nature areas thus offer different options for a stay that includes nature in the plans.

Plan your walks and paddling route

If you want to explore on foot, consider the Bruksleden: the final part of section 8 leads to Ramnäs. Skyltvandringen, by contrast, focuses on the history of various places in Ramnäs. Both options combine physical activity with a theme, but in different ways.

On section 6 of the Strömsholms canal, paddle from Ramnäs to Surahammar. Both towns, where this paddling section begins and ends, have train and bus connections. If you are planning to travel to or onward from the area by public transport, check the timetables in advance. This paddling route is distinct from the walks and historic stops in Ramnäs.

For your bearings on site: Ramnäs guest harbour is behind Järnboden. Showers and toilets are in a small building made of slag stone. The historic buildings also represent different periods: Ramnäs kyrka dates from the early 15th century, Söderhammar from 1897; Kättingsmedjan and Järnboden reflect the town’s industrial history.
