A rising ridge, forests and farmland shape the landscape around Broddbo. At the same time, the village is one of the few small, well-preserved railway settlements along the Sala–Krylbo line. For a trip that brings local history and outdoor activities together, Broddbo offers two distinct themes: the development of the railway village and the options at the outdoor exercise trail and playground.

Broddbo as a railway settlement

The Sala–Krylbo section of the Norra Stambanan was inaugurated in 1873 and contributed to Broddbo’s development as a railway settlement. The railway is therefore a defining part of local history: it helps explain how the settlement developed.

The former railway station building has been preserved and is now used as a residence and workshop. The building illustrates the change from its former function as a railway station to a different use. In this way, the history of the railway settlement is represented not only by a date, but also by a building that has survived.

The trading post and chapel

Werners Handelsbod was built at the end of the 19th century. Its origins were linked to the construction of the railway, as Broddbo grew. The shop was always a very important meeting place for the local community; it closed in 2009. Its construction and closure mark two tangible milestones in the village’s history.

The Broddbo Chapel adds a religious and architectural perspective to this history. It was built in the 1890s and belonged to the Mission Church. It is considered culturally and historically valuable both as a chapel and as a building characteristic of its time. It is also associated with Broddbo’s development around the turn of the 20th century and the construction of the railway. The chapel brings together architectural style, religious significance and the development of the village.

Outdoor activities

The municipal outdoor exercise trail is 2.2 kilometres long and passes through varied terrain. In winter, it is prepared for walking; a wind shelter is located beside the trail. If you would like to add outdoor activity to your stay, you can make the trail a focus of your visit.

The playground in Broddbo has a small-animal theme and includes, among other things, a slide, a climbing frame and a barbecue. Several slopes there are suitable for sledging in winter. These offer different options for winter activities: the exercise trail is prepared for walking, while the playground’s slopes are used for sledging.

An older transport history

Another historical thread leads to Broddbo skogsväg. It is said to have been built in the time of Gustav Vasa, when the area belonged to the Väsby estate. To make the road passable, it was routed across a flooded marsh. This made it possible to deliver grain, firewood and charcoal from northern areas to Sala on time. The story of this road describes a specific supply task and adds a different historical context to Broddbo’s later development around the railway.
