Umeå brings together art, history, science and trails into the outdoors. This offers a range of ways to shape a stay, from international contemporary art to hands-on science. Bildmuseet is located on the Konstnärligt campus, a pleasant five-minute walk from central Umeå. It is one of Sweden’s leading art galleries for international contemporary art. In central Umeå, Guitars – The Museum houses one of the world’s largest privately owned guitar collections. The two venues offer different experiences: international contemporary art at one, and a specialised guitar collection at the other. When choosing cultural attractions, you can decide based on art form and subject rather than treating the two museums as interchangeable destinations.
History from Different Perspectives
The historical attractions also differ significantly. The open-air museum Gammlia is part of Västerbottens museum and comprises around 30 buildings that were relocated there from various places in Västerbotten. Gammlia has three Sámi settlement areas: South Sámi, Forest Sámi and North Sámi. Kvinnohistoriskt museum is Sweden’s first museum dedicated to women’s history. It tells the story of the past from a perspective that gives space to voices previously excluded. The difference is useful when choosing: Gammlia focuses on buildings and settlement areas, while Kvinnohistoriskt museum focuses on women’s history and the voices given space within it.
Hands-on Science and Cultural Attractions
Curiosum is Umeå University’s science centre. Children and adults can explore, experience and discover science and technology together. Visitors can try experiments, code, get creative and play games. It also features a large dome theatre with a 360° screen. This offers a different approach from museums focused on art, collections and history: exploring together and taking part in activities. If you want to experience science and technology in a variety of hands-on formats, this is a clear thematic choice. Väven is a hub for culture and experiences in Umeå, broadening the selection with its wider cultural and experiential focus.
Sculptures, Riverside Trails and Nature
Umedalens Skulpturpark has 43 sculptures in its permanent collection. Admission is free; check before your trip whether a visit is possible and under what conditions. This adds a dedicated focus on sculpture to the museum collections. There are also different ways to spend time outdoors: the riverside promenades along the Ume River are ideal for exploring the area around central Umeå. Umeå has 220 kilometres of cycle paths. Tavelsjöleden leads from Broparken in the centre into a nature reserve. This gives you the choice between exploring the central area along the river and taking a route from the centre into a nature reserve. The different themes and routes give you a practical basis for choosing Umeå according to your own cultural and nature interests.
