Cross-country ski trails for beginners and competitive athletes alike give Malå a clear connection to winter. Sami cultural heritage, trails and waterways also offer themes to explore during a stay in and around the area. This lets you plan around the activities that matter to you.

Winter: trails, races and routes

Malå has cross-country ski trails for beginners and competitive athletes alike. This range can be taken into account when planning together, if travellers have different levels of experience or sporting goals. Tjamstanbackarna has four lifts.

Malå IF holds annual youth competitions and long-distance races in the varied terrain in and around Tjamstan. The competitions offer a different focus from individual cross-country skiing and add an annual event to the range of sporting activities.

In Malå Municipality, the Malå Snowmobile Club and the local villages jointly maintain the winter trail network. There is also an excursion route to Ljustjärn by the cross-country ski trails. The information covers different areas: a trail network across the municipality and an excursion route by the trails leading to a specific destination.

Hiking trails and Sami cultural heritage

Tjamstanberget is suitable for hiking during the summer season. Near Malå, a 2 km trail leads from the end of the road at Bölevallen to Koppsele. Koppsele is one of the oldest Sami settlements in Malå Municipality. The trail therefore leads from a clearly marked starting point to a place with Sami cultural heritage.

Malå hembygdsgård is a living cultural heritage site on the eastern edge of Malå. Nearby, Vildmarkscamp offers the opportunity to experience Sami culture. These provide two distinct options: cultural heritage on the outskirts of the area and the chance to learn about the culture as part of a camp experience.

Waterways and swimming spot

Near Malå, Malå-Storforsen Nature Reserve has trails leading into the area from both sides of the river. The waterways around Malå, including the Malån, lakes and streams, are suitable for peaceful kayaking trips. This offers two different ways to enjoy nature: trails through a nature reserve and activities on the water.

Solviksbadet is a swimming spot on the edge of Malå, with a sandy beach. A long gravel road and a cycle path lead to the beach. Swimming is seasonal; if you’re planning a day at the beach, check in advance that your preferred dates are suitable.

More experiences and local information

Laplands Wild Paws dog-sledding tours take place in Malå and Björkås; guests can ride on a sled during these experiences. If you’re planning this activity, check the current dates in advance.

As a landmark in central Malå, Café Gräddhyllan is next to Nystedts Kläder shop and Sjöparken, which has a playground. Businesses in the area may change; check these landmarks before your visit.
