Bjurholm combines local history and art with hiking trails, viewpoints and winter activities. Some attractions are in the center, while others are outside the town center or in villages west of Bjurholm. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering which topics interest you and whether seasonal conditions are a factor.
Local History and Art
Bjurholms kyrka was inaugurated in 1935 in the center of Bjurholm. Bjurholms HembygdsgĂĄrden, with several unique buildings, offers another way to explore local history. The first building was moved to the heritage site in 1947. The dates refer to different places and events: the inauguration of the church and the relocation of a building to the heritage site.
Art can also be part of your exploration. The artwork “Oh Du härliga land” is in the village of Balsjö, 5 km west of Bjurholm. It consists of eight sculptures on eight iron posts. Bjurholm is also one of five member municipalities of Konstvägen Sju Älvar. This route runs from the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia in the east to Borgafjäll in the west.
Hiking Trails and Views
The Öreälvens vandringsled hiking trail runs between Örträsk and Bjurholm, passing the Långforsen and Näslandsforsen rapids. In the Balbergets naturreservat nature reserve, a marked trail leads to the summit of Balklinten; from there, the view extends far across the Bjurholm area. The protected area is outside the town center.
The two nature destinations offer different points of reference: on the Öreälvens vandringsled, these are the rapids along the route between Örträsk and Bjurholm; in the Balbergets naturreservat, they are the marked trail to the summit and the expansive view from there. This lets you choose between a route with named waypoints and a trail with a summit as its destination, without assuming a walking time or level of difficulty.
Winter Activities and More
Behind Castorskolan, the artificial turf field is flooded to create Bjurholms Isbana when weather conditions permit, during calendar weeks 51 through 10. Planning therefore depends on both the stated seasonal window and the weather. BrattĂĄkern is a small sledding hill with a tow lift in the center of Bjurholm, between Kyrkogatan and National Road 92.
The municipality has 420 km of groomed main snowmobile trails and about 200 km of smaller snowmobile trails in winter. These figures cover the entire municipality, extending the individual activities in the center to a wider geographical area. A round on Bjurholms golfbana combines golf with beautiful natural surroundings.
The bowling alley in Bjurholm has four lanes that can be rented by the hour. At Bjurholm swimming pool, activities include lap swimming, public swimming, family swimming and swimming for young children. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening times. Älgens Hus is in a village west of Bjurholm and is a moose park with tame moose and calves.
Keep an Eye on Events
Bärfestivalen took place on September 5, 2026, in the center of Bjurholm. That edition’s program included a market with berry-inspired products and handicrafts, as well as activities for children. Individual offerings may vary from one edition to the next. If you want to include a future edition in your travel plans, check the date and program for the relevant event.
