At the center of Lekvattnet is Karmenkynna, with 18 buildings. They represent the building and domestic culture that Finnish immigrants brought with them from the eastern parts of Finland in the 17th century. The history of Finnish immigration is therefore a specific cultural focus for a stay in Lekvattnet.

Finnish Building Culture and Church

The church of Lekvattnet also tells of different historical periods: it was built from 1850 to 1853 under the direction of master builder Nils Olsson. Its Baroque altar and pulpit pieces date from the 17th century and were acquired from the church in Sunne. The building and its furnishings therefore belong to different centuries.

Guided Hikes and Finnskogen

The Torsby Finnskogscentrum offers guided hikes in the area around Lekvattnet. The tours follow Karmenpolku or 7-torpsleden, passing through nature and visiting authentic Finnish forest homesteads. This way, they combine walking the trails with the history of the Finnish forest homesteads. If you are planning a guided tour, check the booking arrangements before you arrive.

7-torpsleden is 7.9 kilometers long, quality-assured and certified by Hiking Värmland. In the border area between Sweden and Norway, it passes through the historic Finnskogen region and by seven homesteads associated with Finnish forest-settler culture. Before hiking, it is advisable to check current trail conditions.

Ritamäki: Nature Reserve and Trail to the Homestead

The Ritamäki Nature Reserve was established to protect the old cultural landscape and its cultural and natural heritage values, and is part of the Natura 2000 network. In terms of distance, the approximately 1.5 kilometers from the Ritamäki parking lot to the homestead can be compared with the 7.9 kilometers of 7-torpsleden. The marked Ritamäki trail is relatively steep and rocky. The road may be closed during the spring thaw.

In summer, the Lekvattnet local heritage association shows visitors around the Ritamäki homestead; the association also serves coffee. Check the seasonal visitor offering before setting out. A visit to the homestead and the hike there therefore require different planning from guided tours on Karmenpolku or 7-torpsleden.

Getting There and Visiting

There is a large free parking lot at the Torsby Finnskogscentrum. The center’s facilities are wheelchair accessible and include an accessible toilet. If these facilities are important for your visit, confirm the details in advance for your specific needs.

Värmlandstrafik serves Lekvattnet on weekdays with bus route 205 between Torsby, Lekvattnet and Vittjärn. Check the current timetable for your travel day. The nearest bus stop for 7-torpsleden is in Lekvattnet; you should also check stop information before setting out.

When looking for accommodation in Lekvattnet, your travel date and the season are useful planning considerations: the bus route runs on weekdays, while visitors can tour the Ritamäki homestead in summer. The cultural sites and trails you want to include in your stay can help you choose the right time to travel.
