On Ljusterö, visitors can explore everything from archipelago nature and hiking trails to a church, museum and art. When planning your trip, it helps to consider each place and trail according to its particular appeal: nature watching, swimming, a challenging route or insight into the island’s history.
Nature reserve, birdlife and archipelago views
In the Själbottna-Östra Lagnö Nature Reserve, hiking trails wind through natural landscapes. There is also a fishing jetty and wheelchair-accessible toilets. At the seaward tip of Brännholmen, you can swim from rocks smoothed by the inland ice. This gives you a choice of different nature experiences: trails through the landscape or swimming from the rocks.
Many bird species nest in the nature reserve. East of Skakroksudden, birds found in the archipelago include turnstones, oystercatchers and gulls. The Ljusterö Huvud viewpoint offers sweeping views across the archipelago: on a clear day, visibility extends for three miles. Birdwatching and the viewpoint offer two different ways to experience the landscape—through its wildlife or by looking into the distance.
Hiking trails by distance and difficulty
The Pilgrimsleden Ljusterö is 2.6 kilometres long, hilly and challenging; allow at least about an hour to complete it. There are six stations along the route. So distance alone does not indicate how demanding the trail is: the terrain and stated minimum time are also factors when deciding whether it suits your plans.
The Nature and Fairytale Trail starts at Granliden. Its nature trail has route options of 4 or 6 kilometres. This lets you choose a different distance from the shorter Pilgrimsleden; no comparable information about terrain or walking time is available for these options. As trail details may change, check them before your trip.
The Pilgrimsleden also connects nature and cultural history through a protected stone monument with boundary markers. It marks the boundaries between the properties of Sundvik, Östanå Gods and the municipality of Ljusterö kulla; its history dates back to the land reorganisation of 1853. The boundary markers give the trail a specific historical connection.
Church, museum and art
Near Mellansjö, by Kyrksjön in the middle of Ljusterö, stands Ljusterö kyrka, a white-painted, octagonal wooden church. Its history goes back to a chapel that was completely rebuilt towards the end of the 19th century. The church and the Pilgrimsleden offer different ways to explore cultural history: through the design of a building and through historical traces along a trail.
The Ljusterö hembygdsmuseum is housed in an 18th-century residence originally built in Vadholma. Its exhibits include traditional costumes, engagement gifts, photographs and household items. Those interested in everyday history will find different subjects here than at Ljusterö Konsthall, which presents Swedish and international art, crafts and photography related to the archipelago.
Swimming spots and travel planning
For swimming, in addition to Brännholmen, you could visit the public swimming spot Lilla badberget in Linanäs. It is maintained by the municipality; check the facility’s condition before your visit. Kayaks are also available to rent at several locations around Ljusterö. If you are planning a paddling trip, confirm availability before you travel.
If you are looking for a hotel for your stay on Ljusterö, start by deciding what you want to focus on: the nature reserve and archipelago views, hiking trails, swimming spots or cultural history. The different options help you plan your trip around your interests, without combining all the places into a fixed day-by-day itinerary.
