At Åkers kanal in Åkersberga, practical orientation and cultural history come together. The guest harbour is in the centre of town; from your boat, you can walk to the town centre. Hälsans stig, a six-kilometre circular trail, runs along the canal. Together with Ekbacken, the display garden at Länsmansgården and Hacksta, this offers several ways to shape your stay: history by the water, historic sites and garden culture, as well as active recreation.
Canal history and events
Åkers kanal is designated as being of national interest for cultural heritage management. It is also a remnant of Långhundraleden, a historic waterway that ran through Österåker between Uppsala and the Baltic Sea during the Bronze Age, the Viking Age and up to the Middle Ages. This historical connection gives the canal significance beyond its role in helping visitors find their way around town.
Kanalens dag takes place every year in late August at Åkers kanal and Ekbacken. If you would like to plan your visit around the event, check the specific dates and programme, as both may vary.
Local heritage park, museum and garden
Ekbacken is Österåker’s local heritage park. The Båtmansmuseet opened in 1992 and shows how a boatswain’s family lived in the past. The Vita huset at Ekbacken was built in the 18th century. While the museum focuses on the family’s everyday life in earlier times, the Vita huset draws attention to a historic building.
The display garden at Länsmansgården includes Barnens trädgård and a dahlia bed with around 100 different named varieties. This adds a garden experience with a clear focus on dahlias to the historic sites.
At Åkersberga station, Järnvägsparken has a playground of the same name featuring a playful miniature of Tuppen—another point of interest alongside the historic buildings and display garden.
Landscape and active recreation
Röllingby backar extend into Åkersberga’s built-up area and are part of the Tärnan core area in Angarnkilen. The backar therefore combine a location within the built-up area with a connection to a larger landscape area.
The Hacksta recreation area has mountain biking trails and illuminated exercise trails, as well as a disc golf course and an outdoor gym. By contrast, Hälsans stig centres on a single six-kilometre circular route along the canal. This is a useful distinction when planning your day: here you can choose a specific loop, while there you can choose from various trails and sports activities.
Getting there and finding your way
You can reach Åkersberga from Stockholm östra by Roslagsbanan; from the station, buses continue to Danderyd, Ljusterö and Norrtälje. Check timetables before travelling, especially if you plan to continue by bus. This will help you coordinate the train and bus legs using the appropriate departure times.
