Lakes, hiking trails and a rich industrial history offer several possible focuses for a stay in Nykvarn. Those looking for a hotel in Nykvarn can plan their trip around whether hiking, paddling, winter activities or historic sites are their main interest. The trails vary considerably in length and type; some activities are also subject to seasonal conditions.

Hiking Trails and Lakes

The Turingeleden is 3.8 kilometres long and runs along the southern shore of Lake Turingen in Nykvarn. Hälsans stig is about seven kilometres long, making it considerably longer. The connecting section of the Sörmlandsleden starts about 100 metres west of Nykvarn railway station. This is a useful point of reference, but the trail does not start directly at the station.

The lakes and forest areas also provide geographical reference points: Vackstaskogen is on the outskirts of Nykvarn. Lake Vällingen lies south of the forest, and Långsjön to its north. The Jägarskogen nature reserve is on the northern shore of Yngern, not far from the town of Nykvarn.

On the Water and Outdoors in Winter

The 27-kilometre Åkers Styckebruk–Nykvarn canoe route starts in Åkers Bergslag in Strängnäs Municipality and leads via Visnaren, the Marviken lakes, Klämmingen, Stora and Lilla Kvarnsjön, and Gullsmorasjön to Lake Yngern. The route is easy to paddle and includes seven portages; the longest is 700 metres. When assessing the route, therefore, consider not only the paddling distance but also the longest section on land.

On Alcrofältet, the ski trails range from three to eight kilometres, depending on snow conditions. The illuminated Elljusspår is 4.5 kilometres long and partly hilly. Snow and frost conditions are decisive for skiing. In winter, Hökmossbadet also has a pier for cold-water swimming, with a device to protect the opening in the ice.

Another outing option is LĂĄdbilslandet: the Jordbrukslandet area features miniature tractors and agricultural machinery. A bike ride from central Nykvarn to Taxinge Castle and back is about 28 kilometres via the suggested detour. The road option may change, so check the route before setting off.

Churches and Industrial History

The oldest part of Turinge Church dates from the 12th century. It includes a burial chapel that Erik Dahlbergh designed and had built for himself and his family at the end of the 17th century. It is considered one of Sweden’s most distinguished Baroque monuments. In the church vestibule is an 11th-century runestone with one of the longest inscriptions in Södermanland. Nykvarn Church, by contrast, is in the centre of Nykvarn and was built in 1974.

The local heritage museum Smedsbygget shares insights into the historic parishes of Turinge and Taxinge. The industrial history also goes back a long way: the name Nykvarn comes from the “New Mill”, built at the waterfall on the Turingeån, east of the present-day manor house. An ironworks was also established there to process refined iron; ironworking at Nykvarns bruk was expanded and improved in the 17th century.

The industrial mill environment includes mill buildings and staff housing from the new paper mill, dating from the second half of the 19th century, as well as older houses from the era of iron production. The older staff housing on Bruksgatan forms a well-preserved group of buildings. The transition from iron production to the paper mill can thus be traced through the different groups of buildings.

Getting There and Finding Your Way Around

Nykvarn can be reached by car via the E4 and E20. At Folkets park on Gammeltorpsvägen, there is a car park with ten spaces, located 600 metres from Nykvarn railway station. Local parking regulations may change, so it is worth checking them before leaving your car.
