Väddö offers a range of starting points for a trip: paths along the Väddö Canal, maritime and ecclesiastical cultural history, and autumn nature-watching. Cycling and café visits are also among the activities described. When choosing where to stay, it’s worth first deciding which of these themes you want to shape your visit.
Paths along the Väddö Canal: starting points and destinations
A walking path follows the canal from Älmsta in the north to Bagghus in the south. A hiking trail about 4 kilometres long runs from Kaplansbacken, by the Roslagen Maritime Museum, to Bagghus. Stage 10 of the Roslagsleden starts at Bagghusbron and follows the canal to Älmsta. The canal is the common feature, but the named starting points and destinations differ. The approximate length of 4 kilometres applies to the hiking trail from Kaplansbacken. For your own planning, it therefore helps to first choose your preferred starting point or destination and plan around the route specified.
Maritime traditions and cultural history
The Roslagen Maritime Museum in Älmsta presents Roslagen’s maritime traditions, from the Viking Age to modern ferry services. Kista Hembygdsgård is a historic complex with 21 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. From there, a cultural history trail leads to a burial ground dating from the Late Iron Age. Väddö Church preserves four medieval sculptures from the old church. These offer a range of cultural themes: maritime history, historic buildings, an archaeological destination and sacred art. As you plan, consider which of these interests you most.
Nature-watching and cycling
Rönnskärs udde Nature Reserve is an important area for observing migrating birds in autumn. The small Väddö prästgård Nature Reserve, characterized by coniferous forest, is also in the Väddö area and includes wet swamp forest. The two nature experiences have different emphases: autumn birdwatching is the focus at Rönnskärs udde, while Väddö prästgård is characterized by forest and swamp forest. There’s also a starting point for cycling: Väddö’s winding roads are suitable for relaxing and adventurous rides. You can choose between nature-watching, forest and cycling based on your interests.
Cafés and a break along the way
Kröns Trädgård is a garden centre on Väddö, just outside Älmsta, and is easily accessible for wheelchair users and people using walking frames. Kröns Kök at Kröns Trädgård serves homemade fika. Farmor Mary’s Café at Väddö Gårdsmejeri offers homemade ice cream, cheesecake, pies, salads, cheese sandwiches and KRAV-certified coffee. The two cafés also differ in what they offer: Kröns Kök focuses on fika, while Farmor Mary’s serves both sweet and savoury food, as well as coffee.
Getting there and choosing accommodation
Väddöbygden can be reached by SL bus, car or your own boat. The places and starting points mentioned provide practical guidance. Search for hotels based on the themes that matter to your trip, and choose how to get there to suit your plans. This way, your choice of where to stay starts with the interests that bring you to Väddö.
