Nacka connects the big city and the island. When planning your trip, you can choose between different interests: walks with historical connections, trails through nature reserves, or museums and cultural offerings. This lets you shape your stay around the topics you’d like to learn more about in Nacka.

Nature and trails in Nacka

In the Nyckelviken Nature Reserve, old oaks and meadows among densely green tree groves shape the landscape. During the day, visitors can see cows, horses, chickens, rabbits, sheep and pigs on the farm; which animals are on view may vary by season. This gives the area an agricultural dimension alongside its landscape.

Hellasgården is located in the large Nackareservatet recreational area, right on Stockholm’s southeastern border with Nacka. The area has hiking trails, illuminated routes and an outdoor gym. Outdoor swimming spots are located at Källtorpssjön and Söderbysjön. This means different kinds of activities are available, from walking on trails to spending time by the water.

In the Erstavik area, the Municipality of Nacka maintains the green, blue and new white trails. There are also marked trails and small roads suitable for walking or cycling. In the Tollare Nature Reserve, you’ll find many trails as well as an illuminated route for walking or running. From the summit of Himlaberget, just over 70 metres high, the view extends across Baggensfjärden and the islands beyond.

Walks and traces of history

A cultural and historical walk along Nacka ström covers witch trials, industrial society and mill operations. Within the Municipality of Nacka, this walk is about 2.1 kilometres long and takes around 1.5 hours. The industrial remains at Nacka ström and Källtorpssjön also date back to the 16th century. The walk thus connects themes from social and industrial history with specific timings and distances to help you plan.

In the Tollare Nature Reserve, Tollareställningen is located on Hjortberget. It was part of Stockholm’s outer air defence ring, was built during the Second World War, and is the best-preserved installation of its kind in the greater Stockholm area. Another historic walk in Boo passes through the Skogsö Nature Reserve. It includes Skogsömonumentet, which commemorates the 1719 Battle of Stäket, in which Swedish troops defeated a Russian galley fleet.

Museums, art and culture

At the Nacka hembygdsmuseum, you can see objects used by farmers and crofters in the 19th century. The museum also presents Nacka’s earliest history and provides information about shoemaking and textile production for personal use. To get there, take bus 71, 404 or 443 from Slussen towards Jarlaberg; from the Jarlaberg stop, continue on foot to Nyckelviken. Check the connection before travelling.

Svindersvik is one of the oldest surviving summer houses and a well-preserved example of Nacka’s 18th-century heritage. Brygghuset has a seasonal café serving baked goods and lunch. If you’re interested in visual art, Nacka konsthall hosts around six exhibitions a year, all with free admission. Kulturhuset Dieselverkstaden offers performing arts, music, visual art and creative activities.

More things to do in the municipality

In the Velamsund Nature Reserve, there is a birdwatching tower and an adapted viewing platform with step-free access on the eastern shore of Rudsjön. The observation tower in Ryssbergens naturreservat can be reached on foot via a trail: from the entrances at Marinstaden and Birka, or from the roundabout at the eastern end of the Kvarnholm tunnel. The pier at Kyrkviksbadet is accessible to wheelchair users. The Järla sjö–Sickla sjö waterfront promenade can also be extended along the water all the way to Hammarby Sjöstad.

Getting here from Stockholm

Nacka is 15 to 20 minutes from central Stockholm by bus from Slussen or commuter ferry from central Stockholm. Check the timetable before travelling. When planning your day, keep the two time estimates distinct: 15 to 20 minutes refers to the journey from Stockholm, while around 1.5 hours is the stated duration of the walk at Nacka ström.
