Älta offers a range of options for a stay: time by the water, walks and hiking trails through nature reserves, or cultural activities. At Ältasjön, swimming, fishing and birdwatching come together; elsewhere, the focus may be on art, local history or sporting activities. When planning, consider which of these options suits your days best – that way, you can also tailor your search for a holiday apartment to your own travel plans.

Water, Birds and Swimming Spots

Ältasjön is a swimming lake and fishing water, as well as a good place for birdwatching. Numerous species breed there, and birds stop at the lake during migration. Birdwatching opportunities therefore vary by season; swimming and fishing offer further reasons to spend time by the water. The western part of Ältasjön and its surroundings are part of the Flaten Nature Reserve.

Älta has six municipal bathing spots. Ältabadet is a gently sloping, accessible beach with a fixed ramp and a sandy shore. Buses 401, 821 or 840 will take you to Älta Gård; from there, it is approximately 400 metres on foot to Ältabadet. Check the timetable before travelling. Another named bathing spot is Strålsjöbadet, the developed and popular swimming spot in the northern part of Strålsjön.

If you are looking for a water route rather than a day at the beach, you can follow the canoe route: it runs from Dammtorpsjön through Ältasjön and across Drevviken, continuing all the way to the sea. The focus is therefore on a route across several bodies of water, not just a single bathing spot.

Nature Reserves and Nature Trails

Älta mosse-Strålsjön Nature Reserve brings together a range of habitats: bog, lake, deciduous swamp forest, deciduous forest, spruce forest and a majestic pine forest on rocky ground. There are beautiful walking trails in the reserve. Nackareservatet, meanwhile, has the highest biodiversity of Nacka’s nature reserves, thanks to its varied vegetation.

The Sörmlandsleden trail passes through Nackareservatet, through the forests south of Söderbysjön and through the area around Ulvsjön. It also runs past Strålsjön-Erstavik Nature Reserve on the eastern side of Strålsjön. Visitors interested in the history of the landscape can also find Stone Age settlement sites in this reserve: they lie along the crest of a sandy and gravelly glacial esker.

Culture and Local History

The cultural history walk in Älta offers insights into Älta gård, the crofts in Älta, glacial potholes and Gula Faran. Another glimpse into the past takes you to Älta mosse: peat was extracted there and dried near the croft Lovisedal. At Älta kyrka, there is a bay behind the altar featuring a stained-glass painting by Lars Abrahamsson. The art trail in Älta offers another way to experience art in Älta.

Kulturhuset Älta offers courses for children, young people and adults. Various activities are organised by non-profit associations, private individuals and professional groups. Reception is open Monday to Friday from 10 am to 7 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm; it is closed on Sundays and public holidays. These opening hours apply to the reception.

Outdoor Sporting Activities

Ältadalen Activity Park has large lawns for play and sporting activities, as well as a multi-use pitch for football and floorball. Älta idrottsplats has a parkour area and a motor skills course. Älta IP has one football pitch for eleven-a-side and one for seven-a-side.

The outdoor gyms also differ in their described surroundings and equipment: Hedvigslund Outdoor Gym is located in a park setting. The outdoor gym at Älta IP is on a sports field and includes a log fitness course with fixed weights and an obstacle course. When planning, you can choose between exercising in a park setting, tackling a course or playing ball sports.
