Hälleforsnäs can be explored through several themes: the history of the ironworks, contemporary art, summer theatre and trails through forests and nature. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping these highlights in mind: some activities are tied to the summer season, while others offer a glimpse of industrial history or the landscape.
Industrial History and Art
The Hälleforsnäs ironworks was founded as a cannon foundry in 1659. This date provides a specific historical starting point. The digital tour adds a walk through the industrial surroundings: using a mobile phone or tablet, it shares their history along a route of about 1.5 kilometres. When planning your day, you can allow for the digital tour’s walk of about 1.5 kilometres.
Another perspective is offered by Konstgalleriet Hälleforsnäs in the old industrial area of Hälleforsnäs. Changing exhibitions of contemporary art are shown there throughout the year. Those who want to combine art and industrial history will find two different perspectives on the place: the tour explores the history of the industrial surroundings, while the gallery presents contemporary art in this setting.
Kolhusteatern in Summer
Kolhusteatern is located in the old Kolhuset in the industrial area of Hälleforsnäs. The non-profit association Föreningen Kolhusteatern has produced theatre and musicals every summer since 1996, attracting several thousand visitors. A summer production usually includes just over 15 performances in July and August. If you are planning a theatre visit, check the specific performance dates before your trip; the performances are concentrated in the summer season.
Forest Trails and Sörmlandsleden
On section 23:2 of Sörmlandsleden, there is a viewpoint overlooking Hedsjön. The section towards Hälleforsnäs passes through old-growth forest with several old charcoal-burning sites. The ruins of a charcoal burner’s hut can also be seen along the trail. Here, the landscape meets traces of historic charcoal production, without the need for an exhibition.
Another option is Bruksslingan, which winds through the varied countryside around Bruket and is accessible with a pushchair or wheelchair. On section 23 of Sörmlandsleden, at Mögsjön near the destination, there is a wind shelter, a toilet and suitable camping spots. Bruksslingan is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs; on Sörmlandsleden, section 23:2 offers a viewpoint, while the section towards Hälleforsnäs passes through old-growth forest with traces of charcoal production. On section 23, you will find a wind shelter, toilet and camping spots at Mögsjön.
Canoeing is another option to consider. The tourist information office at Bruket hands out the keys to canoes rented out by Hälleforsnäs bygderåd.
Regional Produce and Cuisine
For a culinary perspective, Jürss mejeri makes cheese from organic milk sourced from farms in Sörmland. Bruksrestaurangen serves local specialities such as Hjälmargös, Mälarlöjrom and Eldost from Jürss. The selection therefore includes both a regional cheese producer and specific dishes: Jürss products connect cheese-making with a dish served at Bruksrestaurangen. If you would like to consider food alongside culture and nature when planning your trip, you can include this part of the offering.
