In Trelleborg, you can combine the city’s history with discoveries along the coast. A striking example is Trelleborgen ring fortress: a quarter has been reconstructed on the exact site where it originally stood. In the centre, traces of the city’s history lead to historic squares, streets and buildings. Outside the centre, coastal nature reserves and a variety of routes take centre stage. When planning, it is also worth distinguishing permanent attractions from seasonal events and offerings with changing opening times.

Viking history and the historic city

The oldest parts of Trelleborg lie around Gamla Torget. The church, monastery and marketplace once formed the city centre. Bryggaregatan also points to a long history: it is one of Sweden’s oldest streets. According to historical interpretation, its route follows the same path as a road from the 7th century that led from the coast to the major trading centre of Uppåkra.

Sandmöllan adds to this historic picture as Trelleborg’s only surviving windmill. It is a post mill dating from the 17th century. In this type of mill, the entire mill body is turned into the wind. Art is another focus: Axel Ebbes Konsthall is a functionalist building dating from 1935. It houses Axel Ebbe’s collected works, including sculptures, prints and poems. The collection thus encompasses different art forms.

Trelleborgs Museum is an art and cultural history museum at Stortorget in the centre. In the exhibition “ÖGA mot ÖGA,” the audio experience “Spåret för nyfikna” is aimed at adults and children. As exhibition listings can change, check before your visit whether the audio experience is currently available.

Events and routes through the centre

If you want to plan your trip around events, the calendar offers two different occasions: the Viking event Slaget om Trelleborgen takes place on the second weekend after Midsummer and includes a Viking market, music and crafts. Palmfestivalen has been held on the last weekend of August since 1976; at that time, music, rides, food and market stalls fill Trelleborg’s streets. Exact dates and programmes may vary from year to year, so check the details before planning your trip around either festival.

The city centre is easy to explore on foot. The pedestrian zone has shops, restaurants and outdoor dining. As a seasonal offering, the free hop-on hop-off train Palmtåget connects Trelleborg’s attractions. Its operating times may change, so check them in advance if you plan to include the train in your day.

Coast, nature reserves and routes

For a comparison of landscapes, the Skåneleden offers two directions from Trelleborg: north across the plain or east along the coast. In the Dalköpinge ängar coastal nature reserve on the edge of town, the trail runs along the coast. Another prehistoric site is in the Dalköpingeån nature reserve: Jättegraven dates from around 4000 BC. The prehistoric monument is 64 metres long and 7 metres wide, and is the largest structure of its kind in Sweden.

Outside Skåre, in Trelleborg Municipality, lies the municipal Fredshög-Stavstensudde marine reserve. Its habitats include bladderwrack forests and seagrass meadows; seals can occasionally be seen resting on rocks rising above the water. There is also an underwater nature trail east of Skåre harbour. Information boards at a depth of 1 to 2 metres provide information about the local flora and fauna.

Another route starts in the monastery garden in Trelleborg: the pilgrimage route is independently marked. So, alongside the coastal stretches of the Skåneleden, you can choose a separately marked route or the underwater nature trail, each offering a different focus for your planning. The best choice depends on whether you want to focus on city history, an event, coastal landscapes or nature watching.
