Svedala can be explored through its architectural history, local culture and hiking. A stone church already stood on the site of today’s Svedala kyrka in the 13th century. Other features include preserved brick, industrial and railway station buildings, the Aggarps kvarn windmill, and offerings related to art and local history. When planning your stay, you can choose between focusing on individual cultural sites or taking a longer hiking route.

Architectural history in the townscape

Svedala kyrka acquired its present appearance, with its tall tower, in 1902. A stone church had already stood on the same site in the 13th century. These two points in time draw attention both to the long history of the church site and to the building’s later design.

Preserved brick buildings from around the turn of the century include homes, commercial properties and mansions. Industrial buildings and a railway station building have also been preserved. The architectural picture therefore extends beyond the church: the surviving examples include residential and commercial buildings, as well as traces of industrial use and a railway station building. This makes it possible to explore the town’s history through building types other than religious architecture.

One distinctive landmark is Aggarps kvarn, a five-storey windmill built in Svedala in 1896, of the type known as a Dutch windmill. The former miller’s residence, Mjölnarebostaden, on Aggarpsvägen was built at the end of the 19th century. The mill and the former residence each provide a specific reference point for the town’s architectural and milling history, without needing to be treated as a single building complex.

Art and local history

In the centre of Svedala is Galleri KVIS, an art gallery with free admission. It is a destination in its own right for art enthusiasts, alongside the historic buildings. The Svedalasamlingen in the Svedala library offers another perspective on the municipality. This extensive collection includes books and writings about places and events in the municipality. The library also has an exhibition featuring objects and image shows. Here, you can explore local history in different ways: through written materials in the collection and through a display of objects and images.

Hiking and other travel interests

Kulturslingan is a hiking trail approximately 36 kilometres long. Parts of it follow country roads, cycle paths and footpaths. If you include the route in your stay, both its approximate length and the types of paths mentioned are relevant to your planning. The route has a different place in your itinerary from an individual cultural stop; you can decide whether to make hiking or visiting individual sites your main focus.

An annual event can also be of interest when planning: the Svedala-Barabygden local history society holds Mölledag once a year. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates in advance. The municipality of Svedala also has two outdoor swimming pools: Bara badsjö and Svedala friluftsbad.

The town centre provides a focal point for shopping and dining: shops and dining establishments can be found on Storgatan and around Stortorget and Marknadstorget. If you would like to combine culture or hiking with a meal or some shopping, you can include these parts of town in your plans.
