Hammenhög is shaped by a distinctive agricultural landscape: cultivated fields stretch as far as the eye can see. At the same time, the surrounding area is rich in archaeological remains. This brings two ways of exploring the town’s history side by side: its agricultural landscape and traces of earlier settlement. Museums, historic architecture and the preserved village layout add different periods to this picture. Anyone interested in culture and agriculture can therefore explore Hammenhög from more than one perspective.

Agricultural Landscape and Village Layout

The older, elongated village layout has been preserved in the western parts of Hammenhög. It adds the history of the settlement pattern to the agricultural landscape. This distinction is useful for understanding the town: the fields shape the landscape, while the preserved village layout offers its own historical perspective. Both are among the features that distinguish Hammenhög from a single historic building or period.

Medieval History at Glimmingehus

The foundation stone of Glimmingehus was laid on 2 May 1499. At Glimmingehus’s Stekarehuset, built in 1640, there are workshops featuring medieval crafts and activities for the public and schools. The programme may change, so check in advance which activities are currently available. Digital guides on an iPad can be borrowed from the shop. Glimmingehus is located at Glimmingen 1, 276 56 Hammenhög.

The year 1499 provides a clear historical anchor for the medieval period; the Stekarehuset adds crafts and activities for different groups to this focus. If you are interested in these offerings, note the option to borrow a digital guide as well as the historic building itself. It is worth checking the current programme when planning activities.

Agricultural History at Lantbruksmuseet

Lantbruksmuseet is a museum of agricultural history in the centre of Hammenhög. Its objects relate to agricultural history from the early 18th century to the mid-20th century. The historic interiors of a horse stable, a pigsty and a barn have also been preserved. This gives the museum a different historical focus from Glimmingehus: here, the emphasis is on objects and historic stable and barn spaces associated with agriculture.

Farm tours at Gunnarshögs Gård in Hammenhög offer another agricultural perspective. Booking arrangements may change, so check them before making plans. This offers a way to explore agriculture not only through the landscape and museum history, but also through a farm tour.

Cafés, Menus and Seasonal Offerings

The café at Glimmingehus is located along the western long side and is open only in summer. At Tingshuset 1881, food service includes, in part, a café with simple dishes and, in part, evening hours with more elaborate menus. These are different kinds of offerings: a seasonal café at a historic building and a food service venue with both café and evening options. As menus and services may change, check the current offering before you visit.
