Vitaby offers several different starting points for a trip: the medieval character of Vitaby Church, the history of the Österlen Railway, and landscapes ranging from farmland to coniferous forest. Just outside the village is Krubbemölla, an old watermill documented in writing as early as 1698. When planning your trip, you can focus on cultural history, the railway or the landscape.
The church, village layout and local history
Vitaby Church retains a distinct medieval character. Inside the church is a triumphal cross dating from the early 13th century. The settlement around the church consists of two farms and the old school. The Haväng–Vitemölla cultural environment, which is of national cultural-historical interest, also includes the parish of Vitaby and reflects settlement continuity from the Stone Age through to 1940.
Another landmark in the village’s history is the Vitaby Market: it was first held in the village square in 1910. Today, the market takes place on one day each year in May. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the exact date of the event in advance.
Krubbemölla and Möllestigen
Krubbemölla is located on the Mölleån, just outside Vitaby. The old watermill has been documented in writing as early as 1698 and connects a specific place with the area’s long history. From the sports field in Vitaby, the Möllestigen trail leads to Krubbemölla. If you plan to visit as part of an event, check its dates separately.
The landscape around Vitaby
The area around Vitaby is an agricultural landscape of pastures, groves and scrubland. Large, untouched coniferous forests shape the landscape west of the village. Torups ängar is a forest reserve near Vitaby and outside Simrishamn. If you choose to focus your trip on landscapes, you can distinguish between the agricultural surroundings, the forests west of Vitaby and the named reserve.
Railway history and connections
The railway settlement of Vitaby began to take shape around the turn of the 20th century. On 18 September 1901, the first steam train stopped at Vitaby railway station. Today, heritage trains run on the 13.4-kilometre Brösarp–Ravlundabro–Vitaby–Sankt Olof section of the Österlen Railway. The heritage railway is maintained and developed by the Skånska Järnvägar heritage railway association.
There are also bus connections from Vitaby to Brösarp in the north and Simrishamn in the south. Check the timetables before including a specific connection in your day’s plans. This lets you assess train and bus options in line with your own travel dates without assuming a particular connection.
Choose accommodation to suit your itinerary
When looking for a hotel in Vitaby, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: local history and the railway offer different points of interest from the landscape and the route to Krubbemölla. Then compare the locations of specific accommodation options with the destinations and connections you actually plan to use.
