There is a large moorland area near Stora Bökön. Stora Bökön is located about eight kilometres north of Lönsboda, on the border with Kronoberg County. Östre myr is the southern part of Såntamyren in Kronoberg County; Bökönasjön lies in the central part of Östre myr and is a lowered lake.
Moorland and pastureland
Östre myr is a raised bog with a large bog area that is partly open and partly sparsely wooded. Extensive marginal mires, mainly characterised by beaked sedge, lie along its eastern edge. There are relatively undisturbed bog areas at Stora Bökön and in the surrounding mires. The open areas, sparse woodland and beaked-sedge-dominated margins represent different landscape types.
Gödas myr and Västre myr together form a mire complex of open and wooded mire areas, marginal mires and terrain depressions. The eastern part of the terrain depression around the mainland islands in this complex has a wilderness character.
The landscape around Stora Bökön and the surrounding mires also includes pastureland with a long history of grazing. Scattered oaks and birches stand in an open pasture, while juniper and hazel grow in the shrub layer. The pastures support species-rich grass heath and wet-meadow vegetation. Old pollarded ashes indicate that the area was formerly used as a hay meadow.
Two distinct landscape features can therefore be recognised: the open and sparsely wooded mire areas and their margins, and the pastureland shaped by grazing. The area's former use as a hay meadow is also part of the history of this cultural landscape.
Birdlife around Bökönasjön and Östre myr
A regional environmental survey from 2022 describes the birdlife at Bökönasjön as species-rich and mentions the mute swan and crane. The presence of individual species may vary seasonally.
The municipal nature plan lists capercaillie, black grouse and crane as species that breed on Östre myr every year. Wildlife populations can change over time. For spring, the plan identifies the path to Lomudden as the best way to hear the male black grouse performing its courtship display at Bökönasjön.
These observations have different implications for timing your visit: birdlife may vary seasonally, while the stated opportunity to hear the displaying male black grouse applies specifically to spring. The locations should also be distinguished: the species-rich birdlife is described for Bökönasjön, while the annual breeding is described for Östre myr. The spring observation is more specific: it concerns the male black grouse performing its courtship display at Bökönasjön and the path to Lomudden.
Skeppshultasjön fisheries management area
The Skeppshultasjön fisheries management area includes several lakes, among them Bökönasjön, as well as the stretch of the Helge å from Möckeln to Bökönasjön. If you are planning to fish, check the area boundaries and rules before your trip.
