Åsljunga combines hiking with local history and a nearby swimming spot. When planning your day, the difference between a loop of about an hour and a longer Skåneleden stage provides a clear starting point. Other highlights include a rock face with unusual lichens, Åsljunga Småkyrka and preserved farmhouses. If you’re looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether outdoor activity, cultural history or time by the water is your main priority.

Hiking by the rock face

Route 12 Lärkesholm–Bjärabygget passes a rock face on the outskirts of Åsljunga. Water constantly seeps over the rock face, where unusual lichens thrive. A path leads from the rock face near Åsljunga up to a viewpoint and Åsljungagården’s exercise trail. Åsljungagården is currently considered a conference facility. If you plan to visit, check the arrangements in advance.

A short loop or a longer stage?

The Åsljungasjön runt loop is 4.5 km long, takes about 60 minutes on foot and is adapted for accessibility. Eight cultural pillars along the route provide information about local culture. If you’d like to combine hiking with information about local culture, you’ll find both along this loop.

At 17 km, Skåneleden stage 12a Lärkesholm–Grytåsa is a considerably longer option. You can start it in Åsljunga at the Landshövdingevägen bus stop, served by bus route 521. Regional bus route 521 to Markaryd also serves the same stop. A hiking trail is about 300 metres away. Since bus details can change, check the current timetable before travelling. This gives you a choice between a loop of about an hour and a 17-km stage, two hiking options of different lengths. At 17 km, the stage is almost four times as long as the 4.5-km loop; the walking time of about 60 minutes applies only to the loop, not to the stage.

Church, woodcarving and local history

Åsljunga Småkyrka was inaugurated in 1962 by Bishop Martin Lindström. The altar, altar rail, pulpit, baptismal font and pew ends were carved from wood by local Åsljunga carvers Gert Lind and “Pelle” Lind, based on designs by Ingvar Eknor. Some 19th-century farmhouses have been preserved along the old village road, Landshövdingevägen. Thanks to the railway, Åsljunga developed into a resort and tourist destination in the early 20th century. The farms point to the 19th century, the railway to the changes of the early 20th century, and the church marks a later period with its inauguration in 1962.

Swimming spot and choosing accommodation

Åsljungasjöns badplats swimming spot has a diving tower, a bathing jetty and changing facilities. It offers a focus on time by the water alongside hiking and local history.
