Vadstena combines a largely preserved medieval street network with a castle, abbey church and pilgrim tradition. Its historic buildings date from different centuries, and the town’s cultural life extends beyond architecture. If you are planning a cultural trip, you can shape your stay around the town’s history, its monastic heritage, pilgrim routes or a walking tour.

Buildings from different centuries

Vadstena Castle was built in the 16th century by Gustav Vasa as part of Sweden’s fortification system. The abbey church dates from an earlier period: after around 60 years of construction, it was consecrated on 16 February 1430. The different dates and functions offer a glimpse into two defining chapters of the town’s history.

The Bjälboätten Palace is located in the Sancta Birgitta Abbey Museum. Built in the 1260s, the High Medieval palace is considered the best-preserved High Medieval palace in the North. Together with the largely preserved medieval street network, it shows that Vadstena’s history can be read not only through individual sights.

Vadstena lace-making is another cultural tradition. In 2018, the Institute for Language and Folklore classified it as intangible cultural heritage. This extends the cultural focus beyond architectural history.

Monastic heritage and pilgrim tradition

Vadstena Abbey Church is one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage destinations. The Saint Birgitta Ways also lead to Vadstena as pilgrim routes. When planning your trip, you can therefore focus on both a clearly defined destination and a network of pilgrim routes: you can take an interest in the church and its history, or explore the routes that converge on the town.

The Pilgrim Centre has a café, a shop, pilgrim information and a hostel. Visitors can receive a stamp and a Birgitta Certificate there. The centre also offers courses, hikes, retreats and seminars; dates for individual activities vary. Check the current programme before your visit.

Walking tour, guided visit and opening hours

On a self-guided walking tour, you can discover Vadstena’s cultural and historical buildings on foot. A web map and a PDF map are available to help you find your way. Check the latest version of the maps before setting out.

A guided visit to the Sancta Birgitta Abbey Museum is another way to visit the museum as a group: guided group visits can be booked year-round, including outside regular opening hours. Request your preferred time in advance. The abbey church is open daily throughout the year; check the opening hours before your visit.

Between town and countryside

The Borghamn–Vadstena section of the Östgötaleden runs from the former fishing village of Borghamn across the plain to the medieval town of Vadstena and its abbey church. Unlike the self-guided walking tour, which takes you to cultural and historical buildings in Vadstena, this section describes a route from Borghamn through the countryside to the town and the church.

The promenade along the shore offers a different perspective on your stay: there are several swimming spots along the promenade. Local conditions may vary. Cultural sightseeing, pilgrim connections, a self-guided walking tour and activities by the water are therefore different interests to consider when planning your trip.
