On 16 February 1430, Vadstena Abbey Church was consecrated. It was built according to the detailed instructions of Saint Birgitta and is considered one of Europe’s most important pilgrimage destinations. Vadstena is also a destination on the Birgittaleden pilgrimage trail. The church alone makes clear how closely the history of the town is linked to Birgitta and pilgrimage.

Pilgrimage destination and trail

Pilgrimscentrum offers courses, walks, retreats and seminars, and provides information about pilgrimage routes. The individual programmes may vary. If you would like to explore the Birgittaleden, check the route information before setting out. This lets you discover Vadstena’s connection to pilgrimage both at a specific destination and along the route.

Buildings with different stories

The Folkungaätten Palace dates from the 1260s and became part of the first convent of the Bridgettine Sisters in the 14th century. Another building with its own history of use is the Sancta Birgitta Klostermuseum: it served in turn as a royal palace, monastery, veterans’ home and psychiatric hospital. A general guided tour traces this history up to the museum; dates may vary.

Stora Dårhuset also tells the story of the town’s architectural and social history. It was the first hospital in Sweden built exclusively for people with mental illnesses; the building is a state-protected historic monument. Vadstena City Museum also includes a medieval, two-storey storehouse: the ground floor is made of rubble stone, and the upper floor of brick.

Castle, theatre and opera

Vadstena Castle began as a defensive fortress and was later converted into a continental Renaissance palace. Today it offers guided tours and exhibitions; opening times may vary. Its architectural history offers a different perspective on Vadstena’s past from that of the religious and monastic buildings.

The Old Theatre has been preserved almost in its original condition and is one of Sweden’s oldest theatres. It is associated with opera and concerts; programme dates may vary. Vadstena Academy creates opera by commissioning new works and performing older, often unjustly forgotten operas. Vadstena thus offers different ways to experience opera: new commissions and revivals on the one hand, and a historic theatre with opera and concerts on the other.

Townscape and further discoveries

Cobblestone streets and preserved wooden houses shape the impression of the historic town centre. Vadstena also has a beach and a guest harbour. For those wishing to explore beyond the town, the wider region offers its own nature and walking destinations: Tåkern Nature Reserve stretches across Vadstena, Mjölby and Ödeshög and includes birdwatching towers, a Naturum visitor centre and marked walking trails.

Omberg lies outside the immediate Vadstena area. There are opportunities there for cycling, walking and scenic excursions. Östgötaleden and Pilgrimsleden lead from Ödeshög via Omberg to Vadstena. The trails and activities at Omberg therefore complement the discoveries in the town with an explicitly regional perspective.
