Sturefors Castle Park brings together an expansive estate and tangible examples of garden design: the park covers 11 hectares, with four kilometres of 18th-century paths and a partially preserved French-style garden. There is also the history of the castle, church architecture and a cultural landscape. If you are considering Sturefors as a destination, you can choose between these historic themes and the different natural areas.
Castle Park, Garden and Lock
Sturefors Castle was built in the first decade of the 18th century and partly designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger. Together with its castle buildings and park, it forms an ensemble that was designated a listed building in 1976. Sturefors is a very well-preserved and vibrant castle and estate. Most of the castle park is open to the public.
The park brings together features on several scales: the four kilometres of paths were laid out in the 18th century, while the French-style garden is only partially preserved. Its features include a reflecting pool, avenues and parterres. These elements make the garden style evident in specific features, without implying that the entire garden has been preserved.
Another distinctive landmark is Sturefors Lock. It is located right next to the castle and Lake Ärlången, with a difference in water level of 3.2 metres. This means the castle area offers both the garden and the waterworks as different visitor attractions.
Nature Areas and Trails
Sturefors Nature Reserve encompasses open pastureland, oak pastures and broadleaf forest in an ancient cultural landscape. Vistkärret has a different character: there, wild swamp forest predominates, complemented by wide reed beds and grazed broadleaf forests along the banks of the Stångån.
The Rördromsstigen loop trail in Vistkärret is about 1.1 kilometres long and fully accessible. It offers a clearly defined trail option for exploring nature. At the car park for Sturefors Nature Reserve, you can launch or take out canoes and kayaks.
Church and Historic Traces
Vist Church also offers several tangible points of interest: the southern part of Vist cemetery dates back to the Middle Ages, and the church has a distinctive tower near the Kinda Canal. During clean-up work after the 1961 fire, a runestone was discovered beneath the church floor. In October 1965, the stone was repaired and placed beside the newly built church.
Getting There and Choosing What to Focus On
You can take a bus from Linköping to Sturefors and get off at the “Vist skola” stop. From there, the nature reserve can be reached by bicycle or on foot along the public road. Check the timetables before setting out.
When choosing accommodation, your personal interests can be a useful starting point: the castle and garden offer cultural history, while the nature reserve and Vistkärret feature different landscapes and outdoor activities. You can first consider which aspect of Sturefors is most appealing for your stay.
