Roxenbaden lies on the north shore of Roxen. When planning a trip, Sandvik beach, the history of summer houses and the cultural landscape offer different perspectives on the area. They range from seasonal swimming to the development of summer houses and open areas of cultural land and valuable habitats. Roxen is both a landmark for Roxenbaden’s location and the setting for Sandvik beach.
Landscape on Roxen
In the central landscape area of Roxenbaden, old areas of cultural land lie along Road 1136, most of which are kept open. The recreational landscape also includes woodland, large solitary trees, groups of trees, pastureland and ravines. The ravines are designated as valuable habitats.
Summer houses and their history
Four types of summer houses can be distinguished in Roxenbaden: houses designed by architects or master builders, catalogue-built houses, houses built by their owners themselves, and older torps that were moved from other places and used as summer houses. The four groups differ in how a house was built or came to be in its present location.
The oldest summer villas in Roxenbaden date from shortly after 1900 and stand on spacious plots that slope steeply down towards Roxen. Traces of terracing and steps can be found in most gardens. The historical description of these villas therefore encompasses not only the houses but also the plots sloping down towards the lake.
The area around Roxenbaden saw another period of intensive development of new summer-house areas in the 1960s. The villas dating from shortly after 1900 and this later phase of development provide two points of reference in the history of summer houses: they distinguish the oldest villas from the renewed development in the surrounding area.
Swimming and overnight stays in Sandvik
Sandvik beach is on Roxen. During the swimming season, from 15 May to 15 September, the water temperature is measured there. There is a car park for visitors; check the current parking situation before your visit.
The Sandvik recreation area is used for cabin rentals, as well as camping, caravans and motorhomes. If you are planning to stay overnight there, check the specific providers and availability before travelling. Sandvik beach is accessible from Berg via Stjärnorpsvägen; the distance along this road is about 2.5 kilometres.
Roxenbaden as a day-trip destination
Roxenbaden is listed as a destination on the “Roxen runt” cycling tour. For your planning, this and the road connection to Sandvik are two different points of reference: the tour mentions Roxenbaden, while the approximate distance refers to the route from Berg to the beach. This lets you distinguish the general description as a cycling destination from the specific directions to the swimming area.
