Kögenäs lies on Lake Stora Rängen. The houses of five farms have been preserved in the village centre; Högåsa, a soldier’s croft, adds another architectural point of reference to the local history. Also part of that history are the life story of Jonas Petri Kjörling, who was born in Kögenäs, and hiking trails in the wider region. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these different scales: the farmhouses are in the village centre, whereas Rängen Runt and a section of the Östgötaleden run in the wider area. This lets you choose whether to focus on local village history or the region’s hiking trails.
Farmhouses and Högåsa
After the land consolidation reforms, the houses of five farms remained in Kögenäs village centre. This architectural trace anchors the local history in the heart of the village. Högåsa is a soldier’s croft that has been carefully restored and maintained. Together, the farmhouses and Högåsa show different forms of architectural preservation: the houses have endured, while the croft has been restored and cared for. A village walk held on 27 May in a previous year went from the soldier’s croft at Högåsa to Kögenäs village centre; about 40 people took part. The walk makes the connection between these two historical points of reference tangible.
Kjörling’s life
Jonas Petri Kjörling was born in the village of Kögenäs in 1630. In 1653, he became a student of Östgöta Nation at Uppsala University; later, he became a professor in Dorpat. These milestones trace a path from his birthplace through his student affiliation to his later professorship. His biography thus adds a personal dimension to the local history alongside its buildings and farms: Kögenäs is where Kjörling was born, while Uppsala and Dorpat were part of his later life.
The lake and its winter history
Kögenäs is a village on Lake Stora Rängen. In two winters in the past, members of Linköpings Flygklubb (LFK) were able to land on the lake’s ice near Kögenäs. This brings together two different connections to the water: the village’s location by the lake and a historical winter activity on the ice. The landings add a seasonal aspect to the local history, alongside the village’s enduring geographical relationship with the water.
Hiking trails in the wider area
In the wider region around Kögenäs, Rängen Runt runs for 45 kilometres around Lake Stora Rängen. The Sätravallen–Vårdnäs section of the Östgötaleden also runs in the wider area. It follows mainly gravel roads, partly trails, and a short stretch of asphalt. These routes answer different questions for trip planning: Rängen Runt can be assessed by its circular route and total distance, while the mix of surfaces is the main consideration for the Sätravallen–Vårdnäs section. This lets you weigh up the length of a circuit around the lake against the terrain on a particular stage. The earlier village walk from Högåsa to the village centre offers a local point of comparison, while the two routes mentioned above are in the wider region.
