Garphyttan combines trails through forest and meadow landscapes with a clearly visible industrial history. In the national park, the eleventh stage of the Bergslagsleden trail runs between Suttarboda and Leken through the northwestern part of the area. Choosing the destination for a stay lets you focus on different things, from nature experiences and hiking trails to traces of the past.

Hiking Trails, Forest, and Water

The national park features flowering areas and open meadows, as well as deciduous and coniferous forest. Its core includes the old farmstead of Ă–stra gĂĄrden and the preserved open cultural landscape. This combination of farmstead history and landscape gives the area a different character from a purely forested area.

Ängsstigen follows ancient beach ridges formed by the sea thousands of years ago. In spring and summer, seasonal wildflowers line the trail, including wood anemones, columbines, flax, and globeflowers. Torpstigen is 2.4 kilometers long and runs partly through open former farmland, but mostly through coniferous forest. Along the trail are the remains of charcoal-burning pits, as well as traces of historic forestry and mining. If you want to notice how the landscape was used in the past as well as enjoy it while hiking, you’ll find tangible clues along the route.

Ånnaboda Nature Reserve has several circular trails ranging from 2.5 to 8 kilometers in length. The landscape there is shaped by prominent rock faces, old coniferous forest, bogs, and streams; Södra Ånnabosjön has easily accessible shores and bathing spots. Several mountain biking trails start at the Ånnaboda recreation area. Hiking trails and mountain biking routes offer different ways to explore the surroundings.

Södra Ånnabosjön has a sandy beach and a bathing spot with an accessible ramp and toilets. There is also a 2.5-kilometer wheelchair-accessible forest trail. This specific trail information is particularly useful if you’re planning to include an accessible route. Svensbodaberget also has a viewpoint overlooking the national park and a picnic area with a table.

Industrial History in Garphyttan

Garphyttan was first mentioned in 1554 in a mining tax register for the smelting houses of Lekebergslagen. Garphytte Bruk received its privileges in 1642. The works’ historic activities included silver mining; later, nail production became an important product. This timeline shows that the works’ history encompasses several different activities.

Garphyttan Industrial Museum is located at the foot of the Kilsbergen mountains, beside the road to Ånnaboda in Garphyttan. It is housed in the original industrial building. The machine hall displays machinery for making wire and springs. The exhibition includes photographs covering the company’s history from 1906 to the present, local history materials, and a historic classroom. This brings the history of technical work and local history together in one museum.

The two-kilometer-long Kulturstigen trail leads to important sites connected with the former works. Another trace of the past is S:t Josefs kapell: for many years, it once served as the town’s general store. These offer different ways to explore the past—the Kulturstigen leads to places associated with the works, while the chapel recalls a former use in community life.
