Stråssa combines a clearly defined industrial heritage with viewpoints and a swimming beach. When planning a trip, the main question is whether your stay should focus on mining history, landscapes or time by the water: there are named points of interest for all three, but each offers a different emphasis. The mining history can be placed in a timeline, while the viewpoints, open pit and bathing area each add their own impressions of the place.

Mining History and Iron Production

The Stråssa mine operated from the 16th century until 1923. Mining resumed in 1959; the mine was closed between 1981 and 1983. These dates mark different periods of operation. An exhibition explores mining and iron production, with a particular focus on the 500-year history of the Stråssa mine. The historical perspective therefore extends beyond the mine to include iron production.

A 2024 description mentions additional photographs, newspaper clippings and books as additions to an exhibition about Stråssa and the mine’s 500-year history. A 2025 description features a model of Stråssa from the 1940s in an exhibition at Navet.

The remains of the Nederhyttan blast furnace are located at a site where pig iron production ended in 1780. The date therefore refers to this site and its production. It adds another specific connection to iron production to the history of the Stråssa mine.

Viewpoints, Open Pits and Trails

Mulldammen offers expansive views of the surrounding area, while Östergruvan has a water-filled open pit. The two spots offer different experiences: Mulldammen is known for its views across the surrounding area, while Östergruvan is an example of a specific type of mining shaped by water. This makes it possible to experience the landscape’s views and mining traces as distinct highlights.

Near Stråssa is Håkansboda’s old mining area, with old wheel pits and historic roasting sites. A hiking trail runs around the mining area and passes, among other things, a natural meadow. Those looking to combine mining history with a hiking route will find a highlight here that also includes the natural meadow.

From the viewpoints in Kindla, you can see the Stråssa mine to the east. This adds a view of the mine from another location to the landscape experience.

Swimming Beach at Dammsjön

On the outskirts of Stråssa, Dammsjön beach has sandy and grassy areas by the water. There is also a bathing jetty and a toilet. For trip planning, this spot is distinct from the mining highlights: here, the focus is on time by the water, while the mine, blast furnace and historic mining sites shape the cultural side of a visit. When choosing Stråssa as a destination, you can decide whether mining history, landscapes or a swimming stop should be the main focus of your stay.
