Giant’s kettles and erratic boulders in the Sveafallen Nature Reserve reveal the Ice Age’s influence on the landscape. There are also two marked hiking trails to choose from, with different levels of difficulty: the easy loop through Domedagsdalen is about 1.4 kilometres long; the more challenging route around Bergtjärn and the watershed point is about 5.3 kilometres long. You can choose between a shorter, easy loop and a longer, more demanding hike. Länstrafiken bus routes 502 and 593 stop at the Sveafallen stop, north of the nature reserve. Check the timetable before travelling; trail conditions can also change.

Hiking Trails Through Ice Age Landscapes and Forests

Gällberget Nature Reserve is in the boulder-rich southern Kilsbergen area known as Fasaskogen. Due to limited forestry, the forests have remained relatively undisturbed. Marked hiking options include routes of over 3 kilometres and just over 4 kilometres; an easy trail of about 2 kilometres leads to Eriks huggarkoja. Traces of charcoal kilns and the remains of an old croft also give the area a historical dimension.

In Lidetorpsmon Nature Reserve, in the LokaĂĄsen area, there is a 46-metre-deep, completely dry glacial kettle. There is also a marked trail and two picnic areas. This distinctive geological formation shapes the character of the protected area.

Wetlands, Wildlife and Water

Vargavidderna Nature Reserve combines extensive wetlands with boulder-rich natural forests. One of the two marked trails goes around the lake, while the other leads to a lookout tower and a picnic area; there are also designated fireplaces. The lookout tower is recommended for birdwatching. In spring, you can hear black grouse calls there; in summer, cranes. Wolves and lynx are regularly present, though their presence may vary seasonally.

Gryten has a small bathing area and a hiking trail around the lake, with several barbecue spots and wind shelters. Stora Degernäs is a sandy beach on Lake Möckeln with a jetty, parking, toilets, a dog beach and a barbecue area. Lilla Degernäs is a beach with step-free access, a ramp, a floating bathing jetty, a mini-golf course and a playground; it is next to Degernäs Camping. Municipal beach facilities may change or be maintained seasonally. Check the latest information before your visit.

History and Everyday Culture

Kulturcentrum Berget is housed in former workers’ homes dating from the 1870s. It includes a café, craft shops and small stores, among other things. A small museum shows how families lived in the 1870s. Bread is still baked in the bakery using traditional methods; demonstrations may take place seasonally. Individual shops and activities may change. Check the current opening hours if you plan to visit the museum.

Nysunds kyrka in the town of Åtorp is a wooden church completed in 1639. Its well-preserved ceiling paintings were created in 1747 by Karlstad painter Petter Mård. These two dates offer a brief glimpse into the church’s architectural and artistic history.

Football and Golf

At Fotbollsmuseet i Degerfors, the history of football is presented through memorabilia, jerseys, photographs and trophies. Exhibits may change. A different landscape character can be found at Degerfors Golf, a gently hilly seaside/parkland course in a stately setting by Lake Möckeln and the Letälven River.
