Storsund combines a distinctive railway history with a landscape of lakes and forests. Historic buildings, outdoor activities and offerings at Storsunds ByagÄrd provide a range of options. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you are more interested in local history, outdoor activities or a camping stay.

Railway History and Architectural Styles

After the main line reached Koler in 1893, Storsund became a railway settlement. Around 1900, Patron Hedkvist built the railway hotel. The two dates mark different stages: 1893 represents the settlement's development into a railway community, while around 1900 marks the construction of the hotel. This makes it possible to distinguish the development of the village from the history of a single building.

The station building is considered important for understanding Storsund's society and has an unpainted timber façade. The railway hotel has a two-storey punch veranda, topped by a dome with a curved roof. The railway keeper's house has a timber façade coated with red slurry paint. The architectural details differ in material, colour and form: unpainted timber, red-painted timber, and the veranda with its roof structure.

Lakes, Forests and Outdoor Activities

Storsund is surrounded by lakes and forests. Fishing is possible in the area, although local access conditions may vary. Hiking and running on trails are also outdoor activities. In winter, snowmobile trails lead from Storsund, including towards Koler; access is seasonal and may change. The options differ by activity and season: fishing is possible in the area, while the snowmobile trails are specifically for winter. If you are planning around these trails, check seasonal access in advance.

Storsunds ByagÄrd: Water and Crafts

Storsunds ByagÄrd has a child-friendly swimming beach with a changing room, a wood-fired sauna and an outdoor toilet. Canoes are available to rent; a rowing boat can also be rented for fishing trips. The options on the water serve different purposes: the beach is for swimming, the rowing boat is intended for fishing trips, and canoes are also available for rent.

The Bagarstuga next to the ByagÄrd can be rented for baking. Storsunds ByagÄrd also has a room for weaving and textile courses. These offerings provide a different focus from the beach and boat rentals: baking and textile crafts take centre stage. When choosing activities, you can therefore consider crafts as well as nature and water.

Overnight Camping Pitches

For camping, the grounds of Storsunds ByagÄrd have pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes, with electricity and water connections. There are also pitches for caravans, motorhomes and tents in Lillforsen, about 800 metres from Storsunds ByagÄrd. The choice therefore also involves location: on the ByagÄrd grounds or in nearby Lillforsen. Check availability at your preferred location in advance.
