Altersbruk brings together the history of iron production, the Solanderleden circular trail through Alterdalen, and experiences centred on Gáhkku and rhubarb. For planning purposes, the cultural heritage, two hiking options of different lengths, and seasonal activities can be clearly distinguished.
Ironworks history and preserved traces
Alters Bruk was founded at the Alterlänningen boat landing in Nybyn; the landing is also called Alterheden. Iron was produced at Alters Bruk until 1890. The founding place and the end of production provide two specific points of reference in the history of the ironworks.
At Lassbacken, a mill, several farm buildings and houses have been preserved from the period when Altersbruk was operating. The mix of working and residential buildings places the mill within a broader collection of buildings from that period.
The present-day millpond in Nybyn has been in operation since 1838 and is considered Norrbotten’s oldest millpond still in operation. The dates describe different developments: iron production ended in 1890, while the millpond began operating in 1838 and has continued ever since.
Another perspective is offered by AlterHedens Rabarberbio: in a small screening room, a video is shown that takes you through AlterHedens Gårdsbutik & Rabarberi.
Hiking and nature in Alterdalen
The orange section of the Solanderleden forms a loop from Altersbruk through Alterdalen. The southern route is 15 km long, and the northern route is 17 km. The southern route is therefore the shorter option; it also passes through forests and cultural landscapes and crosses the Alterälven twice.
Conditions on the trail can change. If you are planning a hike, check trail conditions in advance. Alterdalen is known for its diverse wildlife and birdlife, adding a natural element to the cultural landscape without guaranteeing sightings of any particular animals.
The Alterälven offers paddling opportunities at varying levels of difficulty. Water conditions change with the seasons; take this into account when planning. Hiking and paddling therefore differ not only in the activity itself, but also in the conditions on the respective trails and waterways.
Seasonal experiences and visitor information
AlterHedens offers a drop-in demonstration of how to bake Gáhkku, a Sámi ember bread. Scheduled demonstrations take place seasonally. AlterHedens’ guided rhubarb safari takes visitors by tractor and wagon through the forest to the rhubarb fields. The activities differ: the demonstration focuses on baking, while the safari is a guided tractor-and-wagon ride through the forest to the rhubarb fields.
At Bruksbadet by the old mill in Altersbruk, wheelchair users can move around easily both at the kiosk and on the jetty. This specific information helps visitors find their way around the two areas mentioned.
