Discover Kiruna through its city history, art and trails in the landscape. Depending on the route, the distance between the new and old town centres is about 3 to 5 kilometres; walking takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes. This timeframe is a practical part of your day plan if you want to visit several places. The Kin Museum, the LKAB Visitor Centre and the trails at Luossavaara offer different perspectives—from contemporary art and mining to outdoor activities.
City history and art in the centre
You can explore Kiruna’s history, architecture and city relocation on a guided tour or a self-guided QR tour. This gives you the choice between a guided tour and a walk you complete yourself using QR codes. Kiruna Church was inaugurated in 1912 and built in the form of a Sámi kåta. It is temporarily closed to visitors; reopening is expected sometime in the first half of 2027. Bear this closure in mind if you plan to visit the church.
The Kin Museum of Contemporary Art is located in the new town centre, inside the Kristallen City Hall. Through Konstverkstan, the museum offers guided tours, workshops and other activities. The Kin workshop welcomes children and adults and is open whenever the museum is open. If travelling by bus on weekdays, you can take the Lila line towards Hagelstigen to the Kiruna Stadshustorg stop. Check the latest route information before travelling.

Mining history at the LKAB Visitor Centre
The LKAB Visitor Centre is 540 metres underground and can be reached by bus from the Tourist Centre. The visitor areas cover 20,000 square metres. Exhibits, films and machinery illustrate ore mining and iron production; the mining museum at the Visitor Centre presents the mine’s hundred-year history. This brings together technical insights into mining and the mine’s longer history in the same subject area. Check the latest visitor information before travelling there.
Trails and seasonal activities
The Midnight Sun Trail winds through lush mountain birch forest up Kiruna’s town mountain to a viewpoint with 360-degree views. Wooden signs mark the trail; they feature a sun symbol and the text “Midnattssolstigen”.
Luossavaara is used as a recreational area and is Kiruna’s own ski slope. Luossabacken has three lifts, four runs and a park with jumps and rails. In summer, Luossavaara has three downhill bike trails. The activities described therefore vary by season: winter sports on the ski slope and cycling trails in summer.
The Kiruna Snow Festival sculptures are displayed in front of the City Hall in the town centre and remain open to the public until they melt in spring.
